I finally (after hours of begging) convinced my friend David (who detests having his image taken in ANY way, shape, or form) to come out with me today so I could take his picture. It was an overcast day, so I chose to do most of the pics in B&W.

It's my first attempt at any kind of portraiture, and it was all outside...but I would love to have any feedback or critiques. Most especially on post processing and composition. I only made minor edits to the pics and I feel like I'm very much still trying to find my "style."

Thanks!

tell david not to be so coy, he's a good looking dude :)
i like the first two.
i like the hint of col on the second one.
have you tried a bit of dodge 3% with wide brush and
burn 3% to sharpen it up a little? ha says me who
needs to do this more!

these portraits really look nice
the contrast and colours u got them all right
minors
the first pic maybe u should have put some more attention that the head is free..now a bar is kind of sticking out of his head
soo this background is not really apropriete for a portrait or u should have ure model positioned further away from the fence or try to blur the background (zoom and 2.8 apertures or close might help in this regard)
the same for portrait nr 3

Thanks for the tutorial heads-up! It was an interesting read.
Here's the link for those interested.

Maybe swap facial expressions in photos 1 and 3. The 'hard' feel the brick wall gives doesn't really match the grin, but the look on the face in pic 1 would have been a good shot if used here.

That's a good suggestion, thanks :-) My poor friend was so lost, cause I really didn't know what to tell him to look like!! You should see some of the outtakes I have :-)

ladyhawk22:

I posted comments on each shot. Nice work. You've got a good-looking model and I like the B/W. I think that you could probably soften the feel of all three, but overall I think the composition was great.

Do you recommend more Diffuse Glow? Or maybe some Gaussian Blur??

I guess I'm just not really sure which filter will soften the shots best...but I agree...they could be a touch softer.

very nice, there Illinois! Your friend there has no reason to be camera shy. I think it would be interesting to see the two of you learn together. Take some shots, post a few and gather feedback, implement the suggestions, repeat.... :-) Portraiture (sp??) is something I'm definitely not ready for!!

Again, nice job!

I'm not sure what they translate to in PS (as I have MS Digital Image Pro Suite). Something like a layer of gaussian blur at about 50-25% to soften everything - perhaps excluding the model or excluding everything but the model). I think you get what I mean, it's now just a question of semantics and tools, and I wish I could help you more with PS, but I can't - sorry. Perhaps someone who's already very familiar with PS could offer some suggestions... ?

My friend would have my head on a PLATE if he knew that I'd posted samples up here :-) I don't know why he's so shy.....ah well. I never let people take my picture either :-)

We're gonna have to figure out a Central Illinois Get Together sometime!!
