Look at it this way: If the 20d gets replaced with a newer model the existing stocks will be discounted for quick sales!

You don't want the 20Da cuz it's designed for Astrophotography and IR photography, for day to day shots you would need an IR filter in front of all your lenses. :) |

Canon announced the 20D circa August 2004. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there's an upgrade this year. |
You cannot buy an announcement.

If Canon follows practice...the supply of 20Ds available will start to dry up before the 20D is replaced. |

Should we read anything into the current rebates? ($500 on the EOS-1D MarkII and $100 on the 20D)

Nope. They're rebating on a BUNCH of nice lenses too. Just some marketing juice.
Robt.

I reckon they will announce an upgrade of the 20D pretty soon, it will be a 20Ds...with a few mods and very little else, but it move it just that bit further away from the 350D/XT

This isn't really correct. The 20Da has an IR filter in front of the sensor that the 20D has. It has a similar fall-off in the IR regions. Where it is different is in the near-IR response, around 656nm (about 250% more sensitive than a 20D) but almost totally blocks 700nm radiation. (~start of infra-red)

My money says its called the 30D, and I'm praying for the Eye Controlled Focus to be an option (E model). I have that on my Elan - it' so awesome |

Everything Canon makes will be replaced, it's just a matter of time. We can all take a guess, but that's all that is, a guess.
Personally, I don't know where Canon can improve on the 20D except the buffer speed, perhaps more fps, and a bigger LCD. If I remember correctly, the 20D came out about 9/04, so I figure maybe fall of 2006? Just in time for early x-mas shoppers?
It's funny how the current equipment is consider great till the day after a new product comes out. Just look at the 300D. It was considered great till the XT came out and now most treat it as a slow piece of junk. I'm sure there will be some of that as well when the 20D is replaced by the 30D.
I think for most of us, the equipment is not the limiting factor, it's the skill of the photographer, and no amount of technology will compensate for good composition and seeing the light.
