I see there is a trip planned for DC. I will be there in early Sept and was wondering if anybody can share some good spots and other photo tips?

I see some comments about needing permits for tripods in the capital grounds - are there any other catches that I should know about (before been thrown out by the security types)?

Actually, I am pretty sure it's ok to just fly a helicopter in and land it on the white house lawn and setup whatever equipment you have. I heard the secret service throws a big party, tosses confetti - or maybe that's a fragment grenade... Anyway, Make sure there's a group of DPCers outside the fence snapping pictures of the welcome party!

Welcome to DPC, Rob. I am sure you'll enjoy it here. This is a place full of fantastic photographs, inspiring photography challenges and lively discussions. Let me point out some of the regulars for you:
bear_music (don't tell him I told you, but he joined the site when he was 19! He is now 20)
BradP - You'll notice he's won lots of ribbons, but has no camera - doesn't take a detective to figure out what's going on there.
There's RayEthier - I think he was 22 when he joined. His bio says he's 58. He is.
swinging_johnson_v1 - don't let the name fool ya! He is really "v2"
There's this DustDevil guy - He shaved his head so people will photoshop some new hair for him. Nuff said.
Running out of time, but so many people I need to warn you about - buzzmom, rex (that's short for "James"), buzzrock (yeah, you should called yourself "buzzrob" or something cool like that), colyla, laurielblack (she felt compelled to just jam nearly her whole formal name into the username field, but she's cool cuz she used to work at Dairy Queen and always gave DPCers free fries), Suntiki (I think she's having a fling with buzzrock), cpanaioti (I pulled a muscle just trying to pronounce that), Beetle (can't say anything bad about her, she knows where I live), there's TooCool and coolhar (they're cool cuz, well, it's in their usernames), and many others I am sure will chime in if I didn't mention them.

Then there's the Site Council - have you heard about this clandestine group? They recruit people from the membership and there is like this secret election process that makes that Vatican Pope Election thing pale in comparison.

Anywayz - I think I am the only normal, sane one in the bunch - although I have been known to make "the worst comments ever" once in awhile.

This concludes your orientation session. Help yourself to some donuts and coffee and press F1 if you ever need help. :P

LOL, you crack me up. I'm under the impression you don't do anything except post to DPC all day.

Tsk Tsk Ken, polluting the minds of newcomers with such propaganda. You know we're all as sane as they come! And BTW, you KNOW that the Vatican stole that election process from US, don't you?? ;-)

Is anybody gonna anwer this poor guys question before we scare him off?

I'm sorry Rob, as you can see sarcasm abounds on this site, but in a good way. :-D I wish I could help you out, but I've never been to DC, but will be joining in on the festivites next month. Woo Hoo!! I'm sure someone will chime in shortly to lend you a helping hand. :-) Enjoy the site. -Jen

Oh, I forgot to mention jenesis. I think she works for the Site Council keeping people in line. ;-)

I apologize, Rob. About DC... I was there in 1999 with my trusty Kodak DC-40. I took pics at all the obvious places - the "mall", monuments, museums, etc. There is almost no place there that isn't a good photo op. Things have changed as far as security, so I don't have any current info. If you find the thread about the DC gtg, you can chime in there or PM any of those guys. Have fun!

We now resume our sarcasm already in progress...

kirbic, I think I meant to say "I think you're just smokin' white blow, kirbic."

who let him out of his cage, again?

hey there rob and welcome to dpc (hopefully ken hasn't scared you away yet, he has that effect on people [to ken :-p] ).

I have never been to dc but i bet it'll be fun. Lots of classical architechure and stuff like that. I would suggest a wideangle lens and maybe a middle range one with zoom. Probably would not recommend a 300mm lens in DC especially near the whitehouse or pentagon. You might be mistaken for a terrorist and shipped off to guatanamo before you can say "photographer rights"

So yeah, have fun. Post some pics in the forums afterwards if you decide to stick around.

âActually, I am pretty sure it's ok to just fly a helicopter in and land it on the white house lawn and setup whatever equipment you haveâ

Unfortunately my butler is scheduled to service my helicopter that week. My backup plan was to wait until the crowds are gone â around midnight â and backup my Uhaul against the fence and just setup a big long 400mm lens on the top of the truck [I hate fences in pictures you see and I figured nobody would mind as long as I donât jump over the fence :-)].

âsarcasm abounds on this siteâ

I must have missed that :-)

---------------------------------
Thanks for the âwelcomeâ everyone - I think thatâs the word I was searching for.......

I have been looking around and there are lot of good ideas in the galleries â lotsa memories also since itâs been a while for me in some of those places. Plenty to play with now that I have âupgradedâ to digital - The 20D is only a few days old and everything but the body and battery is still wrapped in plastic (reminds me, I should read the instructions from my film camera one day â only been 15 years since I bought the Canon 630). I plan to still shoot some real film but I suspect thatâs a denial thing:-). I have a little digital point and shoot (S230) for the kids but itâs just not the same somehow.

I did see a thread on some DC locations, so I will watch that a little. Odd thing is I have been there a few times but one of those airport â hotel â conference â airport things (I did steal a few hours to look through the air and space museum though).

Welcome Rob. Watching the two ongoing threads about the July GTG in DC will give you some info. What kind of shooting ops are you interested in? I'll be glad to answer questions if I can. Clara, a new member of our Site Council who goes by the username of blemt, is a great resource for info on DC. You're gonna love that 20D.

Did someone mention my name? :D

As the unofficial Guru of all things DC, I would be more than happy to play tourguide when you get here. Just give me the dates. What are you interested in? There's so much to see, from the zoo, to the Mall, to the Monuments, not to mention Arlington.

Drop me a PM if you have any questions.

Welcome Rob... sorry you didn't get in on the french fry free-for-all but that's OK. Maybe kpriest saved some for you. Have fun, and my condolences to your former friends and family!!! ;o)
