I believe Mirdonamy's on-going thread for the LA area is a pretty good idea, and as more and more San Diegans'come out of the woodwork I'm thinking it might be a good idea to start a thread that we could watch. We all could use this thread to post those not so common things we run across to shot in the San Diego Area. What do you all think?
Andy
I'll even start this off with "Wings Over Gillespie" this weekend (Sat/Sun). If you like airshows with an emphasis on WWII aircraft this will be a neat event.
Wings Over Gillespie
TIP: The Official Website Shows that the show times are 10:00AM to 5:00PM but the gates open at 8:00AM, if you want to get shots of the static displays with little or no people in them...go in at 8:00AM that's when a fellow shooter from work and I will be showing up on Sunday.

What a great idea, and a great way to start off the thread! I don't have plans for the weekend (yet), and that might be a great place to start!
Have you been to one of these before? I seem to miss it every year, and the planes buzzing around the East County always reminds me that I'm too late!

Yes we have three a year in the area and all offer something different. The Gillespie one offers up the most Older Aircraft...and this year should be really cool as the theme is the tailhook planes from the USS Midway (which just opened the museum this year). Lot's of flying and stunts and static displays.
Now that I think about Last year I had a canon S50 when I took this at gillespie:
In June we have the Ramona Props and Rods which airshow-wise they showcase the Warthog AKA A-10 Tank Killer which is pretty neat. Cars from the Hot Rod portion of the Show race against a mig and a P-51. And the Rods are another great shoot on their own.
And of Course we have the Miramar Airshow (October) which rocks...fortunate for me I did a shoot for a local hotel, that now gives me tickets to their Chalet right on the Flight line...

great idea about a dedicated SD thread! Not sure if I can get to the airshow on Sunday, but let's keep in touch about possible photo-ops in the area.
And while we are at it, is there any interest in getting together for a beer or something? if we do it this weekend it could lead to an interesting entry or two for the Late Night challenge :)) |

Interesting photo ops seem to happen often at the Balboa Park fountain just before sunset. If you face west, you'll get some great shots of the fountain!
No fountain, but it is the same view :)
As for beers, that's a great idea :)

Besides the Airshow over in Gillespie Field this weekend...
Carlsbad is having their Carlsbad Village Faire this Sunday. Haven't been to that one yet but I believe it is another showcase of Arts and Crafts.
On the 15th of May Escondido will be having their street fair.
I did make the Little Italy art walk last weekend. It was a bust for taking photos (never hung out long enough to get the circus act) lots of cool art and photos. Organization was just not that good.
BTW for those who haven't been down to the embarcadaro lately all the "Urban" trees have been replaced and there is some interesting new shots there.

Anyone else walking in the Bay Bridge Run/Walk this weekend (sun)? As I was this is on the 22nd of May...It's the Why Me? walk I have this weekend.
It's a 4 miler starting at the Gas Lamp sign...heading through Ceasar Chavez Park and over the Coronado Bridge and ending at Tidelands Park. Cool way to doing is park downtown, do the walk over to the island then ride the Ferry back (3 bucks a piece).
Lot's of cool shots as they close the east bound lanes as you walk over the bridge. It was pretty high paced last year but I had my carried my monopod and had my gear in my Micro Trekker 100 and it wasn't a problem.

CRUISIN' GRAND
Beginning Friday, April 1 and continuing through September 30, from 5 - 9 PM, Cruisin' Grand is back and doubled in size! The new official Cruisin' Grand route will extend and loop around Grand Avenue and Second Avenue! Join over 400 pre-1974 American-made hotrods, custom, vintage, classic cars and trucks as they begin the 6 - month Friday night cruise down Grand Avenue and Second Avenue in Historic Downtown Escondido.
Attendees and cruisers will be-bop to '50's and '60's music played by, not one, but two DJs as they take part in the spectacular show of works-in-progress to priceless, museum quality classic cars and trucks. At 8 PM event-era cars selected for awards are directed to North Broadway for an awards presentation of 6 of the most sought after awards in all of California.
Attendance at last year's Cruisin' Grand has been estimated at five to ten thousand visitors per night, well over 130,000 visitors per season! A testament to the idea that Cruisin' Grand offers something for everyone: the chance to dine at fine restaurants, sidewalk cafes and coffee shops, attend local live theater productions, browse through antique shops and art galleries, or just stroll and reminisce about times past. Additionally, activities such as hula-hoop or car-trivia contests are organized and announced by the DJ's, contributing to Cruisin' Grand's reputation as a family fun filled event.
(Kylie - this one has your name all over it - LOL) |

Nordlys did you get pics of the Block Party today? Sheesh traffic was backed up the 5 to La Jolla... I ended up going downtown and missed the whole thing. It was way hot today and I know there had to be some interesting shots... :)
BTW: San Diegans... Hornblower and Harbor Excursion 1 and 2 hour bay trips are 2 for 1 if you go into the little San Diego Visitor Shack right on the corner of Broadway across from where you buy tickets for the Ferry and Cruises...pick up their Travel Values book (or have em send it to ya) and there are several coupons for bay cruises... 2hr Cruise for 2 people is $20. Two hours takes you out to the Sub Base and back out under the Coronado Bridge. Cool shooting out there.

Ramona Airshow at the end of the month - It's a small but really cool one to attend as it has Static Display, Airshow and a Hot Rod Show All in one...last year they did a cool showing of the A-10 (tank killer) warthog.
Winner of the Rods and Customs
Owners of the rods were pretty cool about driving out into a clear space for photogs...I got the General Lee around here somewhere.
Top Fueler won this one
It's just a really cool (actually blister hot out in Ramona) relaxed airshow.

Speaking of car shows, anybody know if the El Cajon / La Mesa classic car shows are running? I thought they ran between Memorial and Labor days, but I'm most likely wrong about those. Has anybody hit them recently? |

I don't know if any of you are interested in photojournalism, but Steve McCurry has an exhibit this entire summer at the Museum of Photographic Art (at balboa park I believe). He's the photographer of the famous "Afghan Girl." He's also giving a lecture on Sept 15th there. |

I saw a news report on that. I think I'll visit the show, but I think I'll skip the lecture.
Did you catch the show of Edward Burtynsky's work? Click on works, and check out his Quarries. It was fantastic, and is running until June 5th. I saw him speak; fascinating photog. |

Joan B. Kroc's Monkey Trails and Forest Tales just opened this weekend at the San Diego zoo... Haven't seen it yet (next weekend) but it looks like a whole different perspective for the photog. The elevated walkways are set up as if you were in the canopy of a rain forest. Taking pics of the animals would be all downward into there habitat. If they did it as well as lion camp at the Wild Animal park this should be a treat.
You can read about it Here.
Another interesting thing that is going on for the summer over at the wild animal park is the Cheetah run... It's like 60 bucks (over admission...I'm a member so I skip that) where you get up close and personal for 2 hours as they exercise the Cheetahs in run. I'm thinking I see what kind of shots I can get there...

Meant to reply to this sooner. :-} Nope--I didn't go to the Block Party. I have a hard time with crowds (social anxiety), and was actually serious about "thanks for the warning" ;-). I ended up going to UCSD to work for a bit. :-/

Not a hint :) just some really cool places to find birds in San Diego:
Lake Murray near El Cajon...6 mile walk aroung the perimeter will get you 10-15 different species from Thrashers, warblers, grackels, to the 3 resident ospery's.
Mission Trails Regional Park (Mission Dam area) Hawks, a couple falcons, cliff swallows and a bunch of yellow birds I haven't Identified yet.
Penasquitas Canyon my back yard at work, Hawks, Falcons, Kestrels, and a ton of song birds, yellow orioles...
Del Mar Bird animal hospital (1 dollar donation) gobs of exotics...really really close up shots (macros if you wish) as it is a free flight area.
Then of course there are the (3) high dollar entry places (Zoo, Wild Animal Park (condors are great) and Seaworld)
ed: The Fair opens this weekend might be tough to get into the Bird and Animal hospital...btw: anyone going to see ZZTOP at the fair?
