photograph that depicts the stereotypical "redneck" lifestyle.

Not only is that pejorative but also rather US-centric.
Not a term we use much in my part of the world...

It was not meant in a perjorative way. I guess to those who dislike the history of the south, it may be. I myself do not look at the term "redneck" as being anything but a style of life - no different than African-american, Asian, Europian, etc. I actually find it very interesting, such a relaxed style of life.
But....seeing how at least one person took it wrong immediately, I guess we will have to ignore this suggestion.

You have to remember the global community.

Also, what you refer to as redneck may not be the same as someone else. In some cases it is derogitory to refer to someone as a redneck, regardless of history.

If it wasn't for the term "Redneck" Jeff Foxworthy wouldn't have a career..

You might be a redneck, if you suggest redneck as a challenge. :)

Hey, I resemble this challenge suggestion!!! ;o)

Let's just make the challenge global, call it "perjorative" and let people choose their own. :P

In your part of the world, they're called Irish.

As with many, many terms referring to a group of people this one's moved from non-pejorative to pejorative and back again! Many groups that are mocked using a particular term reclaim that term for themselves and use it as a badge of pride.

A picture of a rusting 1979 Ford 4x4 pickup with a gun rack in the back window sporting huge mud terrain tires, a roll bar rolling across across a muddy field with a trailer park in the background at sunset... a 10.

"redneck" is used a lot in my neck of the woods (pun intended). But I live in Cow-town so it's to be expected. Anyway, my family lives in Newfoundland and they say "rednecks" are people who vote against a majority government...I'd never heard it used that way before. So I told 'em they were arse up ;-)

My sweet wife of 20 years and I have had an ongoing 'argument' (good naturedly) for at least a decade about the meaning of redneck. She's a sweet Louisiana girl, and in her mind "redneck" is indeed a perjorative, describing rough, repulsive and ugly-acting people. I think of it as a descriptive term describing salt-of-the-earth, unsophisticated but honest and good-hearted, hard-working folks. I tell her I am a redneck at heart but she won't hear of that! What an interesting challenge it would make, and I can imagine a lot of DNMC complaints. Shame it'll never happen.

Well, I can say this -- if this were a topic, I would have an endless list of possibilities for subjects. Sometimes, I think I live in redneck capital of the world.

(PS -- And there is a difference between "rednecks" and "good ole' boys")

And there's a difference between "redneck", "country", and "white trash", too.
Lots of each in my family.

You posted while I was typing. I would agree with your wife. What you describe is what I call a "good olel' boy"

Nova, your view of a redneck - "salt-of-the-earth, unsophisticated but honest and good-hearted, hard-working folks" Is the type redneck I was meaning when I suggested this subject. My father-in-law is from Arkansas and is the type redneck you described so perfectly. Many of the family folk from my husband's side are. I find them to be the most down to earth, friendly folks I have ever known. My family has always been northerners, and no where near as interesting or charming.
Sure. 4x4's with gun racks and trailer parks figure in the equation, but only becasue theit life style is care-free and not obsessed with money. They are not in any hurry to rush about...just relax and enjoy life as it comes. I love rednecks.

Sorry Karma, I couldn't resist, :)

This sums up the dispute in a nutshell!
And for anyone who may not be familiar with Jeff Foxworthy and his "You might be a redneck" humor, here are three of his more familiar jokes:

If you go to a family reunion to meet women....
If you read a sign that says, "Say no to crack" and it reminds you to pull up your pants...
If you mow your lawn and find a car....

THEN YOU MIGHT JUST BE A REDNECK!

I'm with you ShutterPug, I love rednecks too :o)

If you allow your 12 year old daughter to smoke in front of her children.... you might be a REDNECK.

If you bought your last 3 wedding dresses at a yard sale... you might be a REDNECK

(from the song "Give Back My Heart" by Lyle Lovett):

"I told her redneckness has got to be a disease
You catch it on your fingers and it just crawls right up your sleeves"!
(ha ha!)

Instead of a REDNECK challenge, what about calling it "Ordinary People", or "Working Men & Women", or as a tip of the hat to Karmat, "Good ol' Boys & Girls", or something else like that?

------------------------------------------------------
You might be a redneck if....

You got stopped by a state trooper.
He asked you if you had an I.D.
And you said, 'Bout What?'
