Now gather round, I have a short story to tell you all...

This afternoon I was in the garden when I heard a small cheeping sound coming from the nearby shrubs. I looked closer and there on a branch was a baby Blue Tit(Chickadee in US), it looked barely old enough to be out on its own. Now, what you you think or do given this situation??

Right, indoors like a shot, grabbed camera and dashed back outside, switching camera on as I went. Next, the lens cap came off and I was ready. Without disturbing it, I took half a dozen shots then put the camera down and picked up the little one. My neighbour was by the fence and said it had fallen...or tried to fly...from the nesting box. I passed it over and she put it back in the box...a few moments later Mum or Dad headed straight in to feed it.

A happy ending? I thought so, until I got back indoors and switched the camera back on...LCD display had a little message on it...

NO CF CARD!!

I remembered then that I had taken it out the night before to download some pics and the CF card was still in the card reader. Yet, the camera had allowed me to shoot away and even displayed the photo on the LCD afterwards! Why did it let me do this without any warning?

The moral of this event is, always make sure you have that CF card in before shooting, cos if you don't look at the LCD when you switch on, you will shoot away merrily for hours with taking a single photo. Don't expect the camera to warn you...it's down to you.

I've done this. There is a setting that will not allow you to shoot without CF card. :(

I think you can set it to where it won't let you click the shutter with no CF card...that's what I did to my camera because I'm the world's worst about forgetting to put it back in!

Sorry for your bad luck, Steve. :o(

dunno if you can on the 300 but on a 20D there is a custom function to disable that. First thing i recommend anyone do is turn OFF shoot without CF.

Bad news indeed!

Slightly off-topic, but you folks realize there's a REASON it's possible to shoot the dSLRs without a card in? It's so that we can jack the cam directly into a hard drive in a studio situation and bypass on-camera memory altogether...

Now, what do you think or do given this situation??

Run over to your neighbors house, grab the little tit, run outside, toss it back where it fell and start shooting pics (with the CF card in this time).

note: Being American, I suppose I should've said "Chickadee" but that wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

Good thing you weren't shooting a wedding for pay. =:0

Don't feel too bad, I went on vacation to France and left my shiny new 4gb microdrive in my card reader.

Wouldn't work well with the 300D, no USB 2. Limits shooting to about 2 frames per minute.

If memory serves, I think you need the wasia hack to set the custom function to disable shooting without a CF. One more reason to install it ;-)

my cheapo little camera is great - it tells me the minute I turn it on there is no card. : )
