I suspect it's still "cheap enough" to be worth setting up a buffer area for current challenge originals to be stored in. I'm sure not everyone would opt-in to upload their original, only those who plan to be gone or those requesting an Administrative Note anyway. |

@ ClubJuggle and GeneralE:
Would it be possible for members to post their originals within the space already provided for their portfolio, and for the Site Council to grab said images for review purposes should the need arise? This way, no additional server space needs to be allocated, and the burden would fall on the photographer to remove the image after the DQ period ends and shot ranking has occurred.
Realizing that the DQ period is not necessarily finite, it seems like in general photographers could remove the image 5 days after voting has ended. People going on vacation could send a PM to the Site Council with an alert that the original is available in their portfolio. Perhaps the SC could add a tiny step to their DQ process workflow to check the member portfolio to see if the original has already been posted.
Not sure if this would work, just an idea. Anonymity could be a problem, I guess, not sure if the SC can see "hidden" shots in the portfolio. |

A couple of thoughts - just my opinion, of course.
There is a process in place here on DPC which aims to streamline the validation process (in terms of timeframe and of most reasonable workload for SC) whilst also giving photographers a fair chance to submit proofs/ arguments within a specified timefrane.
I don't think it's fair to other users to allow extra time or late DQs for this kind of reason. After all, it's not actually mandatory to enter every challenge so if one has to miss one because of one's own travel plans, so be it.
That said, I think it's wonderful that the SC do their best to provide every assistance they can provide to those who would like to participate in a challenge but are not going to be able to follow standard expected proof requirements because of absence.
I do think the onus should be on the photographer to take the burden of this kind service.
Firstly, I think in this instance, the photographer should make arrangements for submitting proof before their planned absence so that SC can access it if required without any additional delay.
Secondly, given the fact that this will certainly increase server storage requirements, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for a small charge to be levied by DPC for this service, using paypal for ease of operation. Something like $1 or more depending on how much those increased storage costs would be.
A charge would not be made for regular proof uploads where requested by SC, only for those made by photographers because of their own personal situations, which are no fault of DPC or SC.
Whilst some might say, why should we pay, my feeling would be, why should anyone get special dispensation for late submittal or why should the community as a whole contribute to costs that are incurred only because photographers are asking for a favour.
Also, some might point out that every cannot use paypal. Given that this is all about finding a solution as a favour to those who cannot, on an occasion, conform to standard requirements, if one doesn't have paypal either, one can always choose to sit it out or risk the DQ.
Just a few thoughts...

The easiest solution to this mess of a matter is don't enter the challenge...go on your vacation and enjoy it without this needless worry!!!!!! |

I can certainly agree to that if one is going on a planned vacation or must leave the area for other reasons, I think the main issue here is "what if my internet goes down for a day or two?"
Currently one must just take their bumps and bruises.
Quite honestly, it is not a perfect world. It would be sad if someone had to be DQ'd for this reason, but we are ALL in the same boat. Anyone's internet access can go down at anytime, regardless of where they are located. We pay the big bucks for roadrunner (hi speed broadband) and it goes down on an irregular basis, emails are misrouted/delayed, and so on. Not to be a hard _ss, but DPC does a _ell of a job and trys very hard (apparently) to make everyone as happy with the site as possible.
I had an entry go awry awhile back and it didn't get in the challenge. I had to take the hit, even though I didn't like it. It didn't feel fair, but in all it is.
I guess what I am saying is, "its as it should be now"

The easiest solution is to email the original to an SC for safekeeping if you are called away for more than 48 hrs during a challenge, or will not be here at the end of the challenge and have a high-scoring image that may ribbon.
I don't see what the problem is; just do a little anticipating...
Robt.

I think the original poster was wondering more about what happens when unexpected absences/internet outages occur. |

One jumps up and down, feels really pissed off for a while and... sucks it up and moves on.
Shit happens.
I think it's really nice of SC to make all reasonable efforts to help people out in such situations but... there's reasonable efforts and there's bending over backwards and building bomb shelters to protect from two-penny firecrackers.
