Originally posted by ckempf: Okay, I gotta chime in on this...Baby Names are my speciality. My wife and I bought baby name books on our third date. My 16-year-old daughter is named Madison and at the time it was VERY unusual. Of course now it is not so unusual, but I still love it. My son is Hunter, which is not that unusual now either, but he looked more like a Hunter than an Ian (the front-runner prior to his birth). Both of my children were "named" prior to being born and that name changed both times as soon as I saw them. In fact, my son's name was changed again a week letter when I realized his four initials spelled something (HACK) not super positive, so now his initials spell HAWK...much cooler. I figure with all four names, he has about 176 possible alternatives to work with if Hunter isn't doing it for him. Anyway, good luck and the name you choose will be the best possible name for your child - I promise. |
I love the name Hunter...and it's true, with my children every time I say one of their names I still am in love with them. What is your son's full name? It's unusual to give 2 middle names, my brother and SIL recently did for their new son, and I just wondered what you decided on? |

Logan Arri = first after the movie "Logans Run", middle after the Arri motion picture camera ( Arnold/Richter )

Loving 'Scout', as well! So many ideas I'd never thought of...
Buzz liked 'Cruz', also. It has a ring to it, but I'm not quite sure what would fit with that, either first or middle. |

As far as the name is concerned... I prefer Christian James for the boy and Autumn Elizabeth for the girl. |
What she said!
Both of those names "flow" beautifully! |

Cruz Alexander Cady has a nice ring to it...
Scout is the name of one of Bruce Willis/Demi Moore's daughters, as well as Rumour. I don't remember the other one's name. I think there are three of them, anyway. :o)
My students come up with some humdingers for names when they name their babies. I know that having a unique name is important, but be sure you choose one that teachers can pronounce and that the child can spell easily by Kindergarten. ;o)

My wife and I went through I don't know how many name lists and culled out the names we liked, then went through a process of looking at how they sounded together, here's the culled list, sorry for the length:
Brent
Caleb bold, dog
Connor Much wanted
Curtis court, courteous
Daniel my judge is the Lord
David beloved one
Forest out of the woods
Hudson
Hunter hunter
Isaac laughing one
Jackson son of Jack
Jacob held by the heel
Jared one who rules
Jaret
Jeremy God will uplift, appointed by God
Joel God is willing, Jehova is the Lord
Justin just, true
Marcus Warlike
Mark warlike, hammer, defender
Nathan Gift of God
Nicholas victorious people
Patrick noble one
Paul little one
Philip horse lover
Robert bright, famous
Ryan little king
Shane God is gracious
Simon he who hears
Stewart keeper of the estate
Talon
Tanner leather worker
Thomas twin
Timothy honoring God
Trent torrent, dweller by the Trent
Wesley west meadow
William valiant protector
Zachary God remembers, renowned by God
We finally chose Ryan Kurt (love the short names) although my favorite which was vetoed by my wife was Talon. Oh well, I did get to name our daughter: Nöel Ann (she was born Christmas Eve, so it was fitting even though we chose the name before we knew the due date). We had 2 names chosen for a girl: India or Amber

How about also looking into whether you'd like a name which also has a meaning and letting that influence your decision too?
For example my name, Kavita, means poetry in hindi. Peter, my husband's name, means rock, I think?
Obviously, Kristian is nice for those who are of the Christian faith, since it harks back to Christ. One of my dearest friends is named Kristine (with a K, not the more common C) and I like that too.
Other names I like for girls:
Kim (Not Kimberly or Kimba, just plain, short Kim)
Ananya
Isobel
Jasmine (though I think this is another that's become a lot more common recently, not that there's anything wrong with a common name, but I'm biased to uncommon ones since I grew up being the only Kavita I'd ever met until I went to India to visit relatives and also more recently met one through work too)
Kiera (I'm racking my memory particularly for those with a K since I see you find that sound pretty)
Katerina (a lady I met on holiday to Kenya last year, very nice lady)
Kay (an American friend and hopefully, soon, a famous and successful author)
Myriam
Alecia (from our own DPC Alecia, pretty name, isn't it?)

Wow! Unbelievable suggestions, you guys!
I forgot I liked Kiera...and it's true I'm partial to the K and C sounds (Cameron is my son, though Miranda is my daughter's name)
Those lists have added even more possibilities to the pot, at least for me! And considering the name's origins and meanings is a great idea.
I think I remember that Amaya means 'peace' in hindi..another one to add.
This is going to be tougher than I thought. Cameron was going to be Cameron whether boy OR girl, and Miranda was a cat I owned as a child. LOL
Thanks again! |

I notice you are interested in some of the Indian names and thought I'd give you some more starting with K along with their meanings:
The translations are from a website so don't hold me responsible if they aren't quite right but you should be able to cross-check any if any stand out as special for you...
Kalini (flower)
Kalpana (imagination)
Kamini (beautiful woman)
Kanti (light)
Karishma (miracle)
Kavya (poem) - I guess this is the same stem as mine as Kavita is poetry
Khyati (fame) - this one sounds a lot like Katy doesn't it?
Kimaya (divine)
Kshamya (earth)
Kundanika (flower)
Kusumita (flowers in bloom)
And here are some non K ones that I liked too:
Amithi (unique) - I like this as it sounds kind of like Amity too...
Ananti (gift)
Anokhi (different)
Chandani (moonlight)
Malini (fragrant)
Manisha (desire/ wish)
Maya (illusion)
Monisha (intellectual)

I grew up with people calling me Dwight (if I was lucky) and I hated it... if the baby is a boy, call him something that allows him to blend in without sticking out... if the baby is a girl, a name that makes her stand out would be best (in my humble opinion.....) |

I like the name Autumn for the girl and Christian James for the boy. I named both my children after the Star Trek series.
Jadzia Shaye for my girl. Jadzia was the science officer on DS9.
Alexander Ryan for my boy. Alexander was Worf's son.
I wanted to name my son Julian Alexander, but my husband freaked out and kept saying that Julian was a girly name. Oh well, at least I got my way on the girl. :) |

My friend Matthew gave me a good suggestion for choosing names. He said to open our back door and shout each of the name choices three times as loud as we can, then pick the one that sounds the best. His reasoning is that we'll be yelling the names out the back door like that every day when we call our kids to come inside, so we should pick a name we'll be comfortable shouting like that every day. Okay, maybe that's not such good advice.
One other note is that names of different syllables tend to sound better together than names of all the same number of syllables. Just FYI. Good luck and congratulations!
P.S. - If we'd had a boy, my wife wanted to name him Justin. I told her I'd only agree to that if his middle name could be Hale. Thank God we had a daughter. ;-)

You know, same thing happend to me, we knew from 16 weeks are third one was a girl, so i named her Darcie... and we loved it ( or so i thought ) and just after she was born, like still in the labour ward hubby said... No i hate that name, i was just being nice to you while you were pregnant, so she got three names before we settled on Taylah, but i still love Darcie to this day, other names she had were Tylah, Eden, Daisy, and Charlie.....

I'm of the more less common names school myself. My first son, I had his name picked out years before he was ever even thought of, and wouldn't budge on it so gave his mom choice for the middle name. He is 19 now -- Rance Michael. My second son, she wanted Rusty (after the nascar driver) and I didn't care for it, so we compromised, and then each picked a middly name, since we both wanted to name him after our respective brothers. He is 18 now-- Dustin Robert Scot.
I remarried and had a daughter 7 years ago, her name is Tucker Rose, and everyone says she definitely is a Tucker (whatever that means, hehe). Some call her Tucker, some Rose, some Tucker Rose, some TR, and the wife and I usually refer to her as "the girl". My wife's great aunt is a nun, and it was kind of cute, when "the girl" was born, sister Sister said "I'll not call her 'Tucker', but I will call her 'Rose'".
ps. If Tucker had been a boy, he would have been Daschel Fox, or Benjamin Fox.

Well My name is Sarah...Do you know how many Sarah's there are? Every time I go somewhere someone yells out..Hey Sarah! And about forty people turn around! :)
So, I decided I wanted something a little different with my kids... Our son's names are Wyatt and Elijah. Of course after I named them that, it seems there are alot more of those names that I thought there was. Our daughter is Allison, but EVERYONE calls her Alli. |
