Greetings...
I'm thinking about trying my hand at some event photography. I am looking for others who are already doing this so I can get an idea of how much you are charging for prints. I plan to start this project by shooting in the local skate park. I plan to make the following print sizes available:
4x6
5x7
8x10
11x14
16x20
I'm curious about 'good' pricing for this type of work. If you shoot event photography like this or have purchased event photos before, I would love to have your feedback on pricing prints...

I haven't done anything like this before. I have a friend at work that used to be a photographer full time. He gave it up to spend time with his family. HE said charge the same for a 8X10 that you charge for a 4X6. IF not people will just buy the small one at the cheaper price go home and scan it to make it bigger. Also if you do weddings you now have to insists that there are no other cameras or you will not get them to buy any because their friends will have some that they are willing to give them. The digital age?

Where's all the semi-pro that make money by just thinking about it. There must be some doing it.
ALSO what web site / service do you use to sell the pics through?

I'll be doing it through my own website. I can't find a suitable service online for this.

I shoot equestrian events in the UK with two friends. Prices are:
6x4 - 70p
7x5 - £2
10x8 - £4
We have possibly the cheapest prices in the country, if not the planet. Ironically, we're also complimented quite a lot for our quality..
More commonly our competitors charge £5-10 for a 7x5, £10-20 for a 10x8, depending on which particular company.
Of course it's related to classic economics - price in/elasticity.. Price goes down, demands goes up. Higher prices have better margin, but you'll sell less. That's not to say you won't make as much, or more, than if you sold more at a lower price.

Setz,
I shoot events at a local hotel/convention center. We shoot and print on-site so that the attendees can take their photos home that night. I also sell through Exposure Manager. I sell a sheet of wallets, 5x7's and 8x10's on-site. We found that too many people liked the 4x6's and we took a bath a couple of times selling $5.00 4x6's. Now the people can purchase the 4x6's as well as enlargements via the website but they have to wait 2-4 days for us to get the images up on the site. If they want to take one home (which a lot of couples do 'cause they're dressed up, want something to remember it by and figure that they'll forget it later) then they end up buying a 5x7 or 8x10. Here's a breakdown of the pricing and the package deals we offer. The group renting the location guarantees a certain dollar amount and all sales go against that amount.
Prices are for single, unmounted prints.
Singles
5x7 10.00
8x10 15.00
16x20 30.00
20x30 40.00
Wallet (sheet of 9) 10.00
Packages
Two 5x7's 15.00
$ 5.00 savings
Two 5x7's
One 8x10 25.00
10.00 savings
Three 8x10's 35.00
10.00 savings
Hope this helps you.
I've walked away from some events in the red and I've walked away from some with quite a bit of money in my pocket. It depends on (1) attendees knowing to bring money/checks/credit cards (some events cost the attendees nothing so they bring little), (2) placement at the event and (3) demeanor of the guests (for example I've had retirees who don't ever get pictures made anymore spend tons and I've had some retirees who went to a Luau theme that seemed to feel that they were too underdressed). It can be a crap shoot but I have gotten several modeling and wedding referrals out of it so its generally a positive if time-consuming venture.
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.
Kev

"Event" is a broad term.
I will be shooting a non-profit event in July (for portfolio mostly) and it is a 15th anniversary for a non-profit. I doubt many if any attendees will be looking for prints. I might be able to get the instituion to buy a framed few, use some in their newsletter or hopefully in a press release (depends on if the press shows up for photos or not on that one).
If you are doing a school something (play, dance recital, cheer competetion, football or otehr sports, etc) then the likely money is made form the prints themslelves to the kids/parents.
vintage car racing (or any racing) again the subject of the photo is the customer.
Unless the venue hires you, then you are working on speculation that you can sell prints.
There are many sites that cater to wedding photogs for online print sales, and some do other events as well. //www.collages.net is one.

I photograph dogs in action at dog agility competitions in Ontario, Canada I don't print on site, but I do take orders on the spot and via my web site. I take my laptop computer with me so that customers can view online.
Response is good, but the work is very time-consuming when only I am doing it. This year I will have a student who will "man" my booth while I'm at the fence taking pictures, so I hope that will result in higher sales, and a little bit less post-event work for me.
I know of other photographers who outsource their processing for these types of events, but I haven't figured that end out yet.
You can view my pricing, and access my photo galleries here:

Hope this helps,

I do dance and sportng Events (football)and some parties.I have an online site, where people view the photos the day after the event. I use PRINTROOM and I'm happy with the results. One of the best points is that people all over the world can view the photos and order them. For instanc, the soliders in Iraq log on and view the local sports action and they love it. Because I am the shooter, and they are the fulfullment center, I set my prices and they take a cut. I price according to event. If there is a probability of many pictures being sold, the price is less. If it's a one time event such as a party it's a little more. I'd love to show you my work, but the my site is password protected because there are kids involved. The football site is //www.shoreconferencefootball.com ( I don't run this site..just shoot) hope this helps! |

I like this concept best. I may pursue that route and add 11x14 and 16x20 options to it.
I got shot down on my attempt to offer photos to skateboarders at the local skatepark. I need to pursue another opportunity somewhere else.
