I desparately want the 100-400mm IS lens. Problem is I cannot afford it (common problem, I know). I could sell off one of my other lenses, like the 70-200 2.8L IS - is that a good idea, or should I just wait until I can afford to add the lens to my collection?
My current lenses: Sigma 105 macro, Canon 24-70L, Canon 70-200 2.8L IS.

if not, then i say sell it and get the long one

70-200 2.8L IS

I would NOT sell it. But you might want to see if someone with a 100-400 is interested in trading.

I have a 100-400L and borrowed a 70-200 F/2.8 for a weekend to take some wedding photos. What a delight. I cannot imagine owning one and then giving it up.

I would borrow a 2x converter from someone if possible and see if that will get you by until you can get a longer lens.

Something to consider - maybe get a 1.4x extender to lengthen your existing lens a bit for the interim, and then buy the 400mm F/5.6L when you can get together the $$$ - it is a faster-focusing and sharper lens than the 100-400L, although it has no IS. And you can use the 1.4x extender on that lens with decent results, but you will have to manually focus on a 20D.

Just some options to consider.

Thanks hopper. I have the 1.4 extender on it so the fastest is 4.0 for me on that lens, and it gives me 280mm. There are times I use it at 4, but I'd guess it's only about 20% of the time.
I'd hate to sell off the one only to find out I prefer the 70-200. Decisions!

The 2x does not have such good feedback and that is why I got the 1.4. I still want more! Gee, that's odd LOL I do find that I use the 70-200 more than the other lenses and I do want the IS although I drag around my monopod. I suppose I just have to learn patience....bummer.

I have the 100-400 and you could not take it away from me with a 70-200 and lots of other goodies, it is a great lens. But it really does depend on you. If you like candid shots, wildlife, birds, if you like to bring things close up then you will not regret the trade. IMO really you only lose out on a 70-100mm lens. This is my primary lens and I love every minute of shooting with it. If I could only have one this would be my choice. Then again if you love wide angle shots, this is not the lens for you. : )

Ellamay really says it best here. I have the 100-400 IS and I wouldn't trade it for anything. But, I prefer the type of shooting that this lense affords me... candid, wildlife and sports. I think it's a decision that should be based on what type of shooting you do most... and it sounds like you are continually looking for more reach.

Edit: Spelling

I have the Canon 300mm f/4 IS and have been drooling over the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 for some time now...

But I have other plans for the time being for lens purchases. If I ever get the 100-400 IS, I think the 300mm IS will be on the block, but not in the forseeable future. Going for the Canon 1.4x extender within the next 6 weeks.

If you shoot at less than f4 you won't like the 100-400. It starts at f4.5 and is at f5.6 when you are shooting at 400mm. I have one and love it for wildlife photography but it is not great in low light. Forces me to up the ISO when I'm stalking creatures at the end of the day. It does take some great pictures when the light is right though. Here's an example.

By the way I call this lens "Thag" (as in "the big one, Thag") because it is so big. Since it has IS I can and do use it hand-held. Hope this helps. Ann

I have the 70-200L 2.8 IS and I would never trade it in for anything... exept if Canon came with the same lens f1.4 ;)

I really want the reach of a 400mm but the 100-400 is not an option, I really don´t like the push/pull zoom, and it's way to slow.

so now I am saving up for the 400mm L f2.8 IS, or the 400mm DO, but I'm having a hard time decide wich.

I'd rather be without the 400mm for another 2 years while saving, rather then to buy the 100-400.

but the Sigma 50-500 is a great lens if you really want the reach for less money, image quality is very close to the 100-400L but it handles even better :)
