Challenge: Best of 2004 (Advanced Editing III*)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Skagit River, Washington
Date: Jan 10, 2004
Aperture: f13
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/1250
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Jan 1, 2005

Taken on an eagle watch trip up the Skagit River in Washington State on January 10, 2004. The day was misty and it caused the snow to give off a foggy effect which made the trees behind the eagle appear to be more painted than real. This effect was original to the scene itself and not added via software.

Converted from raw with Capture 1. Had to up the exposure. The day was overcast and drizzly and to be able to freeze motion of flying eagles the camera was set at a high shutter speed and small f stop to be able to have a deep depth of field. Used PS to color correct, sharpen and balance the levels.

I've seen this before, but still anonymous because I don't recall who's it is. But I suspect this wonderful photo will capture a ribbon! Simply fabulous.

I think I remember a shot a lot like this from a previous challenge - or maybe I'm just remembering browsing through this challenge before. Not a suggestion that you've previously entered this, I assure you. I like it - the almost (stress almost) photoshop nature of that background tree. Well composed, different and approachable image.

This isn't one of the technically strongest images I've seen, but there's something captivating about it. I find myself wanting to see what the eagle see's off camera. I think moving a tad to the right might seperate the eagle more from some of the background clutter. That could help strengthen the whole composition. 8

Nicely timed and composed photograph, with a unique feel due to the background.. ((8))

Is it snowing at this (capture) moment?
Interesting composition, I like it how the bird stands out from the dark and soft but still textured (in relation to the environment of the bird) background.

Any chance this is brackendale? A great shot I love that he is in his natural setting.

When you see this photo as a thumbnail you think there is a person sitting on that tree stump and I wonder why I have given it a score of 9, then I open it and see why :), this happened 3 times already. Magical image!

Great composition, and love that fog! I'd have cloned out that twig on the right and darkened the bird's plumage just a bit, and maybe blurred (or NoiseNinja/NeatImaged) the background just a tad - 7

This one reminds me of a Robert Bateman painting. The ghostly tree in the background sets the mood.

What an incredibly beautiful image. The fog/mist really sets the mood. The exposure and coloring on the bird is beautiful. I like how he's looking off the frame. Makes you wonder what he sees. Gorgeous, gorgeous shot. I hope this is on a wall of yours. An easy 10.

Surprised I have't seen at least a couple more eagle shots :P. But as far as eagle shots go this is really good. I like the composition a lot, and you have done a great job of avoiding cliched territory. 8.
