Good luck to you Titia and yes this was a hard one and I debated over and over aobut doing this one,,I took a couple pics and I didnt like what I saw and well the fact I had very little time I decided to sit this one out and see what all f you enter,,I do agree it should be interesting and as with each new challenge it makes me realise that I am still thinking very much "in the box" but anyways I am learning and as long as I can upload my pic so that all can view it easily unlike the one I did for the lighting challenge I should be fine. Ok soory for the book I just wrote. lol

I'm done. I give up. I couldn't get an image I wanted (usually I like what I shoot) so I have to go with an image I have. If anyone is interested, I have about 124 outtakes. :) This one kicked my butt.

But at least my camera is clean. :)

LOL, mine too. I can't believe that I prepped and submitted a relatively ordinary image 5 minutes before the deadline, when I could have submitted this one, shot last night (still riffing on the lighting challenge). I think it says "dust" more than lighting anyway, if I had only read the challenge past "sand"... ;-)

You have to click on it, the detail doesn't show up in the small one.

WOW....

350 entries....!!!

And some really amazing ones too. I am quite surprised at how much diversity was actually able to be found.

:)

Guess, so much for the doubts and fears about lack of entries.

Amazing image. I would have given it at least an 8. Probably more.

I've only gotten one comment thus far - reminding me that the subject is rather gross. Hey - it's granular. I was somewhat surprised to see a few strawberries, though.

The preparation for my first challenge entry (Triangle) consisted of looking down at my Kahlua & Cream, seeing a triangle grabbing my camera before the ice melted and snapping a shot. I knew it sucked, and actually got a better score than I expected.

Wanted to shine in the Granular Challenge, and had a pretty good idea. Here's my experience:

Day 1: Drove to beach. Collected sand.
Day 2: Sorted out sand by little colored bits.
Day 3: Drove to Wal Mart and bought supplies. Spent Painstaking hours fiddling with different ways to get the effect I wanted.
Day 4: Took pictures, Spent Painstaking hours fiddling with different ways to get the effect I wanted.
Day 5: Ditto above. Changed concept slightly. Ditto above again. (All Day)
Day 6: Ditto above. (All Day)
At 6:30 pm on day 6 I abandoned my concept entirely and did something completely different.

Time spent on abandoned concept: Almost 6 days.
Time spent on actual entry: 30 minutes!

My image is very cliche' and not well done. I can do better (I promise). Really suprised that it's holding steady around 5.4.

Actually, I think that's a great shot for the topic at hand. pretty sweet. (literally).

Yes, I have a feeling I've raised some ire. It seems my seemingly simple challenge has probably turned out to be one of the most time-consuming. I have read posts upon posts expressing the painstaking amount of time people have put in, then followed by revising, than more revising, and even more revising - at last followed totally dropping the original concept and grabbing a quick 30 minute shot. *lol*

Hey all

Didn't this (//www.davenitsche.com/time.htm) shot by Dave Nitsche pop into your mind when you were thinking about this? This idea which I KNEW I couldn't use distracted me for about a week hehe. I have serious doubts about my entry as well, it's pretty torrid. Somehow it's stabilizing at about 5.4xxx but this is a serious suprise to me.

"Actually, I think that's a great shot for the topic at hand. pretty sweet. (literally)"

Thanks for that Saj.

Actually I loved every excruciating minute of it. I learned a ton about getting macro images with my camera. I want to get a DSLR soon, and these tough challenges are a great way to practice my technical skills before making the big expenditure.

Me too! I have never taken a macro shot before - bought a macro lens 6 hours before the deadline..and changed my shot 10 mins before the deadline. It's almost doing as well as my lighting shot, which is far superior..so what am I suppposed to make of that?

Oh, I'm so jealous of your camera. I have 4 mega pixels and a magnifying glass:)

It is truly amazing how much time people spend "creating" entries for challenges. PLEASE don't get me wrong, it usually pays off! But I'm still amazed at the number of people who actually "created" things from granules... (yin-yang symbols, chess boards, alternating colors, rainbows, etc.).

I obviously wasn't as creative as anyone I may have mentioned above because I went with a more natural approach, but I have to say there are some amazingly creative and ingenious individuals out there who not only create incredible things, but have the skill to photograph them well.

Hats off to all the entries...

I second that!

Double reply here...
Time spent on abandoned concept: Almost 6 days.
Time spent on actual entry: 30 minutes!

Satisfaction of knowing you did your best: priceless!

And, SaJ - 'ewww... yuck...' was the one comment I've got. I hope I got a 10 out of it? ;-)
