Well, doubt it'll be a ribbon...but it looks like I might finally break the 6.0 barrier

I've commented on this practice before. People who USE IT should use 5 as their basis.

I hit the update button and watched my score drop significantly over a one vote change? After some quick math I realized I was probably just given a one. Views only increased one so it couldn't be previous voters changing thier votes. How dissapointing that they didn't leave a comment to tell me why they found the photo so disagreeable. They must be really talented beyond what any of us can understand......

No worry...

I just had a .1+ drop in a mere handful of votes. So probably someone who is very critical. Hopefully it will all balance in the end. I really want to stay atop of 6.0+

I know I hardly EVER give out 1s (only if the photo completely misses the topic AND is crappy). I've taken the advice of several of you long-termers and started scoring each contest (in which I vote) on a curve. I now make sure I give out at least 3 10s, and gradually increase the number to 5s (which I give out the most of), and then gradually decrease to 2s & 3s. I have held pretty steadfastly to this rule and obviously increase the number of each if there are a lot of entries. Can't you see what "average score" everyone of us gives in our profiles? I would think that fact alone would highlight any rotten apples in the bunch... (Just my humble opinion)

So I'm doing even more poorly than I usually do too. LOL

I had quite high hopes for this one, and started at above 7.0 with a few votes but now is is stablizing at just around 6.0.

I had very high hopes for the photo I took, but so far out of 63 votes I've only had one comment. My score is better than on my last challenges, but it is dropping by the minute as more people vote. Alas, I am about to give up on photography all together.

I vote and go back and give comments later... not saying that person WILL leave you a comment but i know a lot of people do that.

Second challenge. A bit (but not much) better than my first. Should do much better with "Beauty". (I think I can take beautiful pictures :)

please dont quit! most DPC'ers vote first then go back to add comments(as i do). we all have high hope for our photos when we submit them.alot goes into a photo to make it what we want(some have even offered thier own blood for a ribbon)all in the hopes of a ribbon. the best advice i can give is to take photos for u( and if they happen to fit the challenge, great!) and have a blast doing it. dont try to take photos for anyone else as this will lead to early burnout and a lost passion( which i feel we need more of in this world) all that counts here is if u like ur photo and u are willing to learn to make it better to become the photographer u passionately wish to be :o)

Ladymonarda,

Don't worry about the votes and comments. The comments are helpful, but not many people leave them. Take the pictures that make you happy. I just had two of my very best scores on my last two challenge entries, but this time I am doing pretty bad. I wanted to post something that I liked and knew that it probably would not score well. My daughter and I spent a couple of hours together at the beach for the "Granular" challenge. I had fun taking the picture, and had fun spending that "father/daughter" time and that is what is important. If you want to get a couple of more comments on your photo, wait until after the challenge and then post it in the forums asking what you could do to improve it. If you like taking pictures, please do not give it up just because you haven't gotten many comments or high scores from DPC members. Have fun with your photo's, be creative, and the quality of your photos will improve.

If I keep climbing at this rate I'll end up gettign an 11.xxxx ;)

This is weird. I started out the day on about 4.7xxx after 20 odd votes, an hour ago I was on 5.38xx and now I've moved up to 5.5238. I've only had one comment, though :/

good luck to everyone!

My average vote dropped by a full point. Ouch. Down to 6.2, I'll be a bit heart-broken if I sink under the 6.0 mark. And in truth, I do not believe there is any reason why in this challenge my shot should score below a 6.0. But here's to hoping...

But I'm happy with it. After all it is my first challenge and both commentors said the same thing. I guess that will give me something to think about on the next challenge.

All I have to do is *decide* what to do for it.

Started at 5.42 and up to 5,95 now.
I'd expected better.
Better than my AVR so I'm not complaining too much.

I'm quite a bit confused about the rules. At this challenge it says 'basic' editing and as I read all that's written, it really means 'basic', so I didn't do anything else with my photo, but cropping and sharpening, because I was afraid of being thrown out. Looking at all the entries now, I see a lot of 'after' work being done in toning, coloring etc. If I'd known that was allowed, I would've made my photo a lot more sparkling than it shows now.

I now wonder what 'advanced' editing really means in this context.

as long as it's applied to the WHOLE image, a lot of the things you are saying are allowed.

I wonder if some of these people submitted to the wrong challenge or something!
4 or 5 of them have no grain at all -implied or not.
