Hi Everyone,

Not happy with my Nikon coolpix lately and thinking of switching to a canon - perhaps upgrading to a rebel slr. quick question - I keep hearing alot about dust on the sensors with these types of camera (as opposed to the prosumer point and shoot) - if I don't changes lenses, will this problem not arise? Would I have to buy extra lenses to start out, or does the lense kit it comes with pretty well cover everything as my coolpix 4500 with the different settings does? (Comes with The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens).
Would love to get rebel xt but don't know if it would be over my head, or easy to use with the benefits of a slr - any input would be great! Will check back:) P.S. - my coolpix was around $700, so I am thinking for $200 more the rebel would be worth it - don't think my skills or budget would qualify for the Nikon D70 or Canon equivalent just yet:)

Thanks, bj

You will get dust on the sensor. Just the nature of the beast. This should not keep you from buying one though. It's like not wanting to get a Jeep dirty. The Rebel will allow you speed and versatility. Enjoy!

Don't have a rebel and not sure if this is the one your were considering but you may want to take this thread into consideration...I'd be weary till I found out more.

I think there was a link in there also to a different website that listed other people with the same problem.

Hope this helps.

His question was would the sensor get dusty if he does not change lenses? I would also like to know that.

And how easy is it to clean a dirty sensor? Does cleaning the sensor shorten its lifespan?

i think no matter what, the sensor will eventually get dirty. granted it will get dirtier the more you switch lenses. i have successfully cleaned my sensor a number of times by using one of those nasel dropper things (u use it to suck the mucus out of babies noses.

I bought an SLR in December and haven't had any issues with dust yet. The flexibility of changeable lenses is well worth the risk of occasional dust (if you are careful the risk is small). I bought a 50mm/f1.8 lens (~$100) to supplement the 18-70mm that came with the camera and can cover almost every scenario I need to use it for.

I can't speak to the Rebel, but am very pleased with upgrading from point-and-shoot Fuji to the D70.

- Yes, dust happens, even if you don't change lenses.
- It's easy to clean the sensor, and it does not shorten its lifespan. Remember, you're not actually clenaing the sensor itself, but rather the glass covering it.

171 Rebel-xt owners and 2790 Rebel owners on dpc.

Not all are complaining about dust on the sensor and if they do get some they clean it or have it cleaned. There are countless threads on how to clean them. There is a world out there of different type of lenses all waiting to be bought! Wonderful glass...
Don't be afraid of changing a lens. Don't do it in a dust storm.
>??? Look at the shots these cameras take, does it fit your budget, is it the type of camera you need for what kind of photography you want to do, go to a camera shop and hold one, see if it feels right for you.

Kirbic is right. You can use products like this - //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=357732&is=REG to clean the occasional speck. Don't let that stand in your way.

It sounds like I could take it to my local camera shop to have any dust cleaned it so now that is one obsticle out of the way! :) My budget right now would only allow me to purchase the camera and the kit it comes with, would that do for a start? Or would I have to get extra lenses right away? (I just invested in a larger card, and photoshop elements 3, so my budget is getting a little tight). Okay, a lot tight:) lol

P.s am very impressed with the photos I've seen on the sight with this camera! (i think it would eliminate my frustration with low light situations, and slow, slow shutter response - if this is incorrect please correct me!)
