Hey,
Today, when taking pictures, the shutter on my 300D "locked up." The mirror locked in the up position, and stayed there. After fiddling with it for quite a while, I finally got the mirror to go back down. Now, with any lens, in AF mode, the camera hunts, does not focus, and will not take a picture. Not even in sports mode, and isn't that supposed to fire the shutter even if focus is not obtained? If I put the lens in MF, then it will take a shot, and all appears well (at least on the LCD on the camera).
Any ideas of fixes? What could be wrong? All suggestions and tips welcome...

Doug

Are you getting error 99 in the LCD screen?
05/19/2005 09:19:53 PM · #3
No, it never said any error code, either in the beginning, or now. The picture that it took when it "locked" was about 80-90% black, with a small piece of picture running down the right hand edge.

When I took the lens off (after trying everything I could otherwise first) the "main" mirror was in the up position, but some kind of secondary mirror or something was still partially down. And I believe the shutter was open behind that. I finally got the "secondary" thing to go back up and lay right behind the primary mirror.

After that was when it then refused to focus...

Can you access you menu. If so make sure you don't have it in the sensor cleaning mode. Page 39 of the manual. I don't' know if that will help but you may want to try. Because in the sensor cleaning mode it the mirror will lock in the up position.

Yeah, menu works. Nope, not in sensor clean mode. I did go into it and then back out after this all started, just to see if that would clear it all up. But no dice.

Humm, was it finished loading that picture? Maybe the shutter was still open? I have no idea, just guessing.
Well, you can try taking out the battery, waiting a few minutes and then trying again.
Also if you can, clear all the settings on the camera.
Gee hope you get that working.Good luck~

Mine did this when I tried to use a non-canon lens..the camera couldn't communicate with the lens and locked up on AF but worked OK in Manual...are you using a new/different lens?

I did take out the battery, but just for a minute or two. Maybe I'll try that longer. See if it helps...

That happened to me two days ago. I recharged the battery and everything is fine. The battery at first showed full charge. Turned it off and on a few times and thats how I figured it out. Hope you are having the same problem and not something worse...

Nope, same lenses I've used for 6 months to a year. And canon lenses too. I've tried all 3 of them.

Just a random thought, Did you apply the Firmware hack, and maybe use the Mirror-Lock-up feature, then it froze?
Just a thought, I havent heard of any bad things happening from the Hack.
I hope you get figured out/ fixed soon.

Hmmmm, yeah, my battery shows fully charged too. I just put it in "new" today, but it's been sitting in the bag for a month or two since it got charged. I'll go replace the battery and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip dahkota!

And no, no firmware hack ever applied to this camera.

I can only think of 2 things to do:

Remove the lens and any blockage
Tip the camera back at an angle
Place your hand over the eyepiece
Place your mout over the lens hole and blow repeatedly until it starts breathing on its own.

or...

Take it to the shop.

Sorry that's the best I can do. :(

Here is the download for the350D manual from Canon Site. It makes it easier to search than reading a paper manual. Use the search feature on mirror lockup. Hope it helps.

yeah, thinking of taking it to a shop tomorrow. But figured you guys here might have an idea first.

I tried a new freshly charged battery, no difference. So am letting the battery sit out for an extended period now.

Question is, will the repair (if needed) be worth it? Or just get a new camera... Gotta find out how much $$ to fix I guess...

dswebb...my apologies, I don't know why I was thinking you had a 350d. Sorry!

No problem, you never know what might help! :-)

I think it is USER ERROR!!

Just joking Doug - I couldn't resist :-)

Call me after to take it to the shop.

Well, left the battery out for about an hour. Put it back, still the same thing. Looks like a trip to the shop. Bummer.

This appears to be exactly what happened to me, down to the last detail:

//forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=9003

Called the local camera shop, and nobody around here works on digital rebels, so it looks like a trip back to canon for repairs. And it's out of warranty... bummer. In fact, the lady said nobody works on digital cameras locally at all. Why is that, any reason?

I've heard horror stories of how long their service centers took to get cameras back, and I need mine for lots of stuff in the very near future (our swim team's season starts in less than a week). So, anybody got any good stories of how quickly they were returned to encourage me? :-)

Have you tried to pull the memory battery (CR2015) out it's compartment to let the camera reset completely? That's about the only thing I haven't heard anyone suggest. This should reset everything including your file numbering.

How many shots have you taken with the camera?

The 300D shutter only lasts for circa 10,000 frames.
05/20/2005 11:06:51 AM · #23
I've taken in the neighborhood of 11,000 to 12,000 shots. One of the people on the pbase forum which I found who had the same problem said he had done about 23,000 shots.

Anybody have any idea the $$$ we're talking to have canon fix this problem? $50? $500? I don't want to waste my time (weeks?) only to have them come back and say it'll be $800 to fix, and then it's not worth it, just go get a new camera. If it's going to be outrageous to fix, may as well save the time and get the new camera right from the start...

Yeah, I'd go ahead and just get a 20D. You've taken 12k shots in just over a year. You need tougher gear. You might as well throw in a 100-400L while you are at it :-)
