Hello my worldly friends! I'm hoping perhaps someone can help.
My lovely parents are off jaunting around the world while I am stuck in dumpy Minnesota. Today they have called to enlist my help in finding them a place to stay in Scotland. They are looking for a bed and breakfast or guest farm or guest house or anything like that that will have two rooms with two beds each. They want it to be in or near any of the following places:
Oban
Dalmallay
Taynuilt
Tyndrum
Crianlarich
They also have five places they've heard of but know nothing about. These are:
Rockill Farm in Dalmalley
Aonach Mor Guest House, Edinburgh
Dunedin, Edinburgh
Amar Aqua Guest House, Edinburgh
Dalkeith Road (this might be an area rather than a place), Edinburgh
Now then, do any of you have suggestions for places that I might look up for them? I know absolutely nothing about Scotland or about any of these locations (sorry if there are misspellings) but I will check out websites if you have suggestions. Or have you heard of any of these places that they've heard of or know anything about them?
I am off to check out Google and bed and breakfast associations and all that but thought maybe someone had some personal recommendations. Thanks!

Would recommend posting this on www.Fodors.com/forums - Europe board. There are many, many people who enjoy sharing their knowledge and passion for travel there and someone will surely be able to help.

| Thanks, Kavey, will do. We read through those forums quite a bit before they left, trying to find airline and car rental information. Quite helpful! |

We spent a great weekend in Edinburgh recently. It's a great place to visit. Tell your parents to be sure to visit the Whiskey Heritage Centre ( and definitely take part in the whiskey tasting ) near the castle, walk on Arthur's Seat and be at the Castle at 1pm for the daily cannon firing. The Tower restaurant ( on top of the museum) is an excellent place for a special meal ( a bit more expensive than some) The pubs are very atmospheric and varied.
What standard of hotel do they want? We stayed in a very pleasant and reasonable bed & breakfast just on the edge of the city. I'll try and remember the name if you are interested.

Good question. Decent to extra nice? I'm not sure but will definitely pass on your suggestion if you're able to think of it.
Thanks for the other advice as well. I'll let them know (and then cry silently while I sit home). |

Thanks,

Hi, I think the 3rd destination should be 'Taynuilt' in case you are having problems with Googling. For example try some of these sites. might start you off.
IMHO unless they want a very leisurely trip, spending a night in some of those places may seem like a waste of holiday time - don't get me wrong, they are very picturesque, but perhaps don't have enough in the towns to fill a day. Depends if they are hillwalkers or not. I would say a car would be essential, in which case fitting a couple of these in per day would be do-able. Oban is a bit bigger and offers ferry/boat trips to some of the very pretty islands (Mull/Staffa etc.). Other places to go might include Ullapool or Inverness + surrounds (or even further North if they're brave e.g. Lochinver) to get a taste of the Highlands. Nice castles in region South of Aberdeen. Borders very pretty including Berwick on Tweed. Ditto East Neuk of Fife with St. Andrews.
Edinburgh is great (biased) and I would recommend B'n'B locations in the Dalkeith Road/Leith Walk/Bruntsfield/Meadows areas for their proximity to the centre and Festival events, if that's when they're coming for (book now!). Good bus services (that phrase sticks in my throat but mostly true) across town and day/week passes are available.
PM me with specifics if you get stuck. Ben

Hi There,
I live in Scotland, but nowhere near where you are traveling. Dalkeith road is a road not a place. Dalkeith is a place, but it is quite a distance from Edinburgh.
All the places you are visiting are lovely, but i don't know any specifics about these guest houses. I tour quite a lot and i have found that most b+bs and guest houses are really nice. If you have any questions about this beautiful land, please ask away. If you are near Glasgow, give me a shout and i'll show you the sites.
Have fun
Kev

Yes. :)

Ah yes, thank you for that correction. I didn't hear well over the phone. I'm not really sure about their actual activity plans but I think they have a good idea of what they want to do. They do have a car rented so they should be able to cover a bit of ground if necessary. I will definitely pass along your suggestions, though.
(They will be there on Sunday.)

Thanks for the offer but most unfortunately, it isn't me who will be there. :( |

The reason I asked is that when I saw the picture....it looked a lot like me when I was that age. Very spooky! :)
