The challenge states to: "use lighting in a creative fashion this week so that the lighting itself is a key factor in your composition."
Can someone explain this? I am under the impression that light IS the photograph. "Photograph" translated literally means "writing with light". If lighting was not a key factor in a photograph, the photograph would not exist. ??
Does this mean "show the light source"?

This is probably not a good example but the subject in this picture is the lighting and the colors created by it.

In that interpretation, it would mean the challenge wants us to "show the light source" as the main compositional element. Is that the idea? It seems to me that all photos have a light source. These "interpretive" challenges are where I fail miserably.

I think it is rather simple. Of course any photograph needs some kind of lighting by definition. But the same subject can look very different depending on the particular type of lighting you use or take advantage of (as with natural light). It can make a stunning phoito out of a mundane subject, or vice versa. So the challenge IMO is to take a photo in which the lighting "makes" the shot, so it would not be even remotely as interesting without the particular type of lighting used.

Sorry, I just can't put my head around that. The type of lighting used makes the shot for all great images. I just don't understand this challenge. I give up. I'm going for the granular challenge. That challenge is straightforward.

For the purpose of illustration, I've gone back to some past challenges and posted up some ribbon-winning images that illustrtae both sides of the equation.
Here's 3 ribbon-winning shots where the "light" is incidental to the image:
Here's 3 more where the light IS the photograph, for all practical purposes. Any of these might be expected to do well in this challenge:
Hope this helps...

It does not mean you have to show your light source at all. What you want to do is to capture or create a UNIQUE lighting situation where lighting is what makes your image special. Backlighting or a sunrise or sunset would be traditional examples of that type of photography, but don't limit yourself.
Creative lighting used on an interesting subject and done in a technically superior way will win the ribbons in this challenge.

Not in my opinion. While the lighting may be skillful, it does not draw attention to itself so it is not a major element of the image.

Basically, you have to make a photograph where the lighting is THE key element.
I think you need different types of lighting in the composition. Show how you can manage working with light that are different, without affecting the composition. Those shots I think will do well. |

No... there is nothing unique or special about the lighting on your subject to make the image stand out as a result of the lighting itself.
