Here's a preview:
I took it today off of Santa Barbara, CA (long-beaked common dolphin) - I'm curious for other people's reactions.
Also, the dolphin in the lower right corner - I can't crop it, should I clone it out? I also did some noise reduction, did I do too much?
Here's the big version - 1200x900 - 180K
Thanks everyone. |

I like that photo a lot - great colors and a smooth, silky texture. Of course it would be better if you had more of that third dolphin in the shot, but I personally wouldn't clone it out. Odd numbers create a nice tension in photographs, so I think that changing it to two dolphins would make the image more static. Looking forward to seeing more!

I count 4 dolphins (D'OH!) ;) There's one below the middle dolphin. I find that dolphin as distracting as the one in the lower right. Maybe instead of trying to clone it out, how about using the dolphin on the left to make the dolphin on the right look like it's entering the scene? |

That's really sweet, dude. I don't miond the "buried" do9lphin, he gives the image depth. The corner dolphin has to stay; it's vital to the balance of the shot. Nice work!

My thoughts :-(.... Take them with a pinch of salt.
Over smoothed, and because of this the water breaking line of the primary dolphin does not line up. To be more sereal, the break in the water line and fin must match.
My thoughts :-) Artistic.
Nice cross over to digital arts. I think it is a real acomplishment when the real can match the digital world. It is not that easy. Not joking either. EXCELLENT. |

Thanks for your comments.
It's tough to shoot wildlife, especially when you're going 15 knots.
This is the unedited version (just resized and bumped contrast) - 1200x900 - 180K if you're curious about how much was out of the camera.
I wasn't sure if there was another dolphin under the center one or if it was a reflection off of the wake from the dorsal breaking the surface.
I'll keep hunting through my shots. I've got about 500 - so finding the keepers is tough.
Thanks to everyone for looking and commenting. |

Pem, the entire dolphin is underwater except for a portion of its dorsal fin; that "wake" you see is actually SPRAY being thrown into the air by the fin. It's a measure of how hydrodynamic that critter is that the dorsal is creating virtually NO wake where it penetrates the water's surface. I think you'll see, if you look at his linked original, that he hasn't used ANY smoothing thus far, which makes it all the more surreal in my eyes :-)

Great shot
this would not look out of place in National Geographic.

What a beautiful shot. Great colors, nice move of those dolphins inthe photo.
I wouldn't touch that dolphin in the right corner. I would leave it where it is!
