You can send one you're not using to me to try out for 1 to 3 months.....

So, I'm considering a PAD project where I spend 1-3 months on each lens. Otherwise, I can't see myself being as imaginative and creative as I might be with the more exotic lenses.
Edit: or I might choose a specific focal length with my zoom lenses, ie 300mm. |

This is simple, but always an important lesson for me. You could force yourself (that is unless your profession requires this already) to take only pictures out of doors. That is, it doesn't matter if it is urban or natural, but it will force you to explore your surroundings more effectively and get some fresh air. Simple, like I said.

If you're looking for themes, I've heard of a group called the Circle Squared that takes pictures of circular objects with a square frame. So something like that might help expand the way you look at things and what you notice. Try shooting different "portfolios"....for instance...maybe one is employees and you capture a bunch of different people at different jobs. Maybe you have animals. Maybe you do some that are nothing but sunsets. |

LOL, I didn't say I'd stop using the other lenses altogether! I'd just make more of an effort with my lens of the month. Wish there were more Minolta users around I could borrow lenses from though ;-) |

JOhn, if you're thinking about shooting people, why not Elderly or children. The most expressive to me by far. Maybe visits to Assisted living homes, not only would you most likely get some great shots but you'd probably also brighten someones day.
Kids might be a little more difficult, in todays world anyways... but you seem to have good contacts with some schools (ie your sport shots) that they would trust you to be around the kids. Or a community center that has a playgroup or something like that. Just an idea.

John, How about a nursing home friend of the day shot. Visit and meet some of our great elderly folks and shoot them. Your so good at portrait shots and they are always looking forward to having visitors. A perfect fit. Van

These all sound like great ideas, but being able to do one per day for a year would be impossible probably.

You're probably right about that.....
Alright, how about this? Views from the Road Shots from your car window, or the bus, or the train, or a taxi, or a bike. You drive almost everyday, no? :-)

How about using whatever the current member challenge is and shooting that for the whole week until the next challenge is realesed and then moving onto that for a week.
So, today you would have shot your fourth silhouette! |

It's an interesting assumption.
I have a bright shiny 5 series BMW in the drive, yet I do not drive it every day...
it was 80 miles last Saturday
0 sunday
0 Monday
0 Tuesday
10 miles Wednesday
0 today (thursday)
To qualify this , I am a Brit, so I wonder am I different to most Westerners

I think the "view from the road" sounds like a great idea. I think you would have the opportunity to "see" many different things and points of view with 365 days of this. |

Basically, pick a street corner and shoot there at the same time of the day, everyday. Perspective can be changed or remain static.
Edit: Preferably, the corner has lots of people movement, etc, to keep the photos interesting. One effect of a fixed perspective is that as you look at the range of photographs, seasonal (if you live in seasons) changes are evident. Some people have routines, and you might also capture elements of this, as well as how those same people change over the course of time. It's a bit voyeuristic, at the same time that it's a clearly public activity. |
This is a very interesting idea. I think I might do something like this myself. |

YOu must be one of the lucky ones that gets to work from home ... or independently wealthy :-) .... or stay at home parent ... or rely on public transportation (ie train, subway, etc...) or enjoy the outdoors and (GASP!) walk to work. :-P I think most westerners drive somewhat everyday. Unfortunately, I think we are way too attached to our automobiles. Sometimes, I wish I was out driving everyday, but alas I have babies to take care of and a house to clean. :-D

I could offer a suggestion, but then I'd be accused of trying to stifle creativity. =P

So, the suggestion is like others in this thread: why not monthly themes? at this web site //www.geocities.com/months_12/ there are a bunch of themes for each month of the year. You could pick out the themes you wanted to shoot for each month in advance, and give yourself a map of what you'd be shooting - plus this would still work well with the people and shooting from your car ideas.

I made my decision tonight...
My next Photo-A-Day project will be a little more 'defined' that what I'm doing now, and it will give me the opportunity to photograph people regularly as well.
The theme will be:
365 Days of Photojournalism
Each photo will be accompanied by a short story of some sort. I write something to go with each of my PaD shots now, but this will be more involved.

My Photo-A-Day project will be wrapping up soon as my 365 days will be completed in about 40 days. I have gotten into this routine and I have enjoyed it for the most part. I have learned a LOT from this project, but I don't really know what I want to do when the year is up. I'm at a loss on where to go next.
I can simply stop, or I can keep shooting.
I love the aspect of shooting something everyday, even though it may be something mundane.
What would be a logical 'next step' in the photo a day project? I wonder how complicated it would be to choose a theme to work for 365 consecutive days? Has anyone else narrowed their perspective on the photo-a-day project? If so, what are you doing? |
How about a weekly or monthly theme for your PAD's where all the shots are related by the theme
