Find your Adobe folder and put it in the plug ins folder. If CS works the same as ver. 7

OK, I'm still in PS 6, but this is what I do: move the .atn file into your photoshop program... put it in the folder called Photoshop Actions, which is in Photoshop>>Presets. Then in your actions list, click on the arrow at the top, then load actions, then choose the action you want from the PS Actions folder, and it will show up in your actions menu list from then on.
I hope that made some semblance of sense!!! :o) |

Gothic Glow is an action, not a plugin. It belongs in the actions folder in photoshop/presets just as Laurie says. Uought to work fine out of there. You click on it in the actions list, then while it is hilit you go to the bottom of that pallette and click the little right-arrow icon to run it.

When you open your list of actions (Window>>Show Actions), there will be a pop-up list of your actions already loaded. At the top right corner, there is an arrow. Click it, and you will get a pretty extensive menu. On that menu, click "Load Action." A file menu from your Photoshop Actions folder will appear, and you should select the Gothic Glow action. It will then appear in your action list. Hope that makes it a little clearer. :o) |

When you state Action List...are you refering to Windows/Actions to bring up the action window? If so, there is nothing showing for Gothic Glow...
Sorry to be a pain ;o)
EDIT - Thanks Laurie...It is now in my Actions list.

It doesn't show until you load it. Try the steps I just listed and see if it appears. :o) |

I know she already loaded her actions and you all probably know this, but just in case someone doesn't. When I downloaded actions, I have a folder just for actions, I just went to the file and dragged and dropped it right into the actions pallette. It was easiest for me
Like I said, I'm nearly Photoshop illiterate so if this is already a common way to do it, just ignore me, lol. |

that's a great action...i use it quite a lot. a word of caution, though...because the action uses layers in other than "normal" mode, it's not legal for basic editing challenges. don't want anyone getting DQ'ed because of it. :) |

If anyone can PM me with how they use this (as far as setting go) I would greatly appreciate. Some Gothic Glow results I like include the rollover example here.

Thanks for the clarification I was thinking it was a plugin till I looked at it. I will try what Laurie suggested when I get home this afternoon.

I felt inspired to download that action, too. I managed to install and even run it (go me!)
However, it didn't give me any choice re setting, it just ran and did it's own thing. I had expected it to stop here and there and get me to choose strengths/settings.
What am I doing wrong? |

I downloaded it too and thats what it did for me, I'm not so sure you can change the settings...
sweet, I didn't see my picture of the covered bridge was on here! Mine isn't gothic glow, it is something that Discraft taught me.

Hmmm...... perhaps the only way to lessen the effect is to change opacity of the layer, but I wonder about making it stronger? Might have to play with running it twice. |

I don't change settings in the action itself, rather use other techniques to give it different looks such as hue/saturation shifts, layers of other effects, as well as curves, levels, and contrast adjustments. I use it a lot (probably too much) but it's one of my favorites. :o)
PS...there are actually 2 different gothic glow actions you will see in your list. One is General and one is C-O-I. The C-O-I one will allow you to select a certain area with your lasso tool and apply the effect around that area only. Fiddle with both and see if you get the results you would like. :o)

I've done that before...and sometimes more than twice. ;o)

Beetle, I can pm you the technique I used on my photo if you would like. You wil have a more control over the effects on the picture.
see rmtm333's post |

You can change the effects by playing with contrast or curves before hand.
This will reduce some of the saturation impacts. (If that is what you are after)
You also have the option of COI (Centre of Interest) option which applies localised affects.....

Nidan - yes please, send away!
Artan, Laurie - thanks for sharing your wisdom, this place rocks!
Now I have to go make myself useful for a while, but I'm looking forward to playing with this some more later on.
Have a great day, folks! |
