Question, is it just me....or is their a general "dearth" of comments.
Usually, in the past challenges I usually receive a dozen or so comments and several entries have been in the 25+. Now the lowest number of comments I've ever received was 6.
But with the recent challenges I've received very few comments. I have 4 challenge submissions and the total comments combined for all four barely breaks a dozen. With my top being "6" comments.
Dreams: 4 comments
Outside Looking In: 4 comments
Triangle: 1 comment
Five: 6 comments
What happened? a) Is it just me? b) or are others seeing a similar effect?
If it's just me, than perhaps I'm moving more into that middle-ground of not good enough to comment on and not bad enough to comment on either.
But if everyone is receiving less comments - than why? Did the "comment" challenge burn everyone out and now we're seeing a negative consequence?
I'm just curious....

I think that you answered your own question: four challenges are currently pending.

Agreed. There's over 850 images to be voted/commented on - that's going to cause a bit of dilution. |

My wife participates in a writing site, and recently left a comment on a submission. Of the 4 comments, hers was middle of the road (one was downright negative). The author of the piece PM'd her about her 'attitude'. She PM'd back trying to clarify, and to verify that she was the intended PM target (the PM seemd like it was directed at the negative commnter). The author again responded about her attitude and 'I con't continue this if you're going to be like this".
So it is not just here.

Yes, but we've had 3-4 challenges concurrently for a while now. Night I received some 35 comments I believe....
There were over a 1,000 images before hand....
It's very likely I'm just entering the middle-of-the road quality level (which is not a bad thing, it's good to improve one's skill level from bad to okay...*lol*)
Was just curious if others noted a similar dearth of comments? |

There was an increase in comments when people were trying to qualify for the Dreams challenge. Now that it is over, people are tired of commenting and are taking a break. IMHO.

I've entered 73 challenges. It is not often I get more than 20 comments and getting fewer than 10 is common. In two current challenges I have 15 comments on one image and 8 in the other.
To be honest the only real value of MOST comments is they show a voter likes the image. I personally appreciate that very much since I want my pictures to appeal to people.
However, it is more common that comments contain conflicting advice when it is offered. You get comments like, "Perspective is great" and "would have been better if you had taken a different perspective"; or, "Wonderful interpretation of the challenge topic" and "does not meet the challenge" for the same image.
The real key to improving your photography does not come from comments. It comes from developing the ability to objectively study the winners compared to your own entries and answering the question, "What is it that makes their images better than mine?", then emulate it. Then, after you can do that, apply your own creativity to what you have learned.

I have zero comments in Outside... I also have a very bad score. I only really entered it for the comments and so I'm extremely disappointed :( |

I just now got my first one for Triangle (although with my score, I shouldn't be surprised I guess...). I got many more on my other (albeit few) entries. It's still early in voting too though, and I think that a lot of people (myself included) go back and add additional comments throughout the voting period.

Swinging Jo....
Hey, no prob, not fretting...just curious. Actually, it's the "damn Yankees" ever since '98. Yup....I'm a die hard "Padres" fan. You should have seen the effect I had in 1998 when a lone San Diego fan shouts out in support of his Padres in the midst of a multitude of New York "Yankees" fans. (If there were not laws against murder...one would have occured - namely mine.)
GO PADRES!!!!
Okay, so it seems many are in fact suffering a dearth of comments probably as a result of the "comment" challenge. I just wanted to get a feel. This let's us know if the challenge was successful in it's goal or not.
Funny thing - i've been making more comments recently. :)
I think I am seeing images more critically (i've noticed my scoring - as in how I score others - has dropped by a point or more on average). |

This site has been extremely valuable to me and I'm sure to others, and one of the most helpful factors, imho, is the fact that some people do comment even when they don't use "nice" or "good" or "great." Frankly, I'm beginning to feel that I shouldn't check "helpful" when I encounter one word positive comments, as the comments that do tell me what's wrong (from the commenters' perspective) in my images are the ones that are truly likely to teach me new things, to get me to think more about the shots.
Please keep the constructive comments coming :) Please don't take to heart the folks who don't check enough of their egos at the door when they enter challenges. Thank you.
If anyone feels like practicing, feel free to look at my portfolio and rip it apart :)

Yes I commented on comments from my night shot where one person posted "Not very exciting now is it" and the comment right next to it read "Very exciting shot"
ROTFL
But you can also garner a lot of good tips, advice, and an ability to look at the shot differently - from outside your own ingrained perspectives - and that can be a very useful tool for learning.

you hit it on the button.
some people are just comment challenged, just like I am vertically challenged.
but it would be nice to know why some people give out 10's on a whim, then turn around and rerate the pix to 1. is it to make there pix more successful, or is it pay back, or did they have a dream, or did God tell them to, or is big brother involved....these are questions that make me loose sleep at night.
Padres?????? what ever.

GO PADRES!!!
(I will say, their new stadium is probably the nicest of the modern stadiums and if you want to shoot some baseball and you're in the southwest it is a VERY photogenic stadium)
[[[BradP, can I get a little help here in support of our Padres?]]]
