Believe me, I am absolutely thrilled at the placement I got for moods, considering I expected about a 5.7 or so. I wanted to bring this up, though, because I found it kind of funny (really) that the comments on this image were so diametrically opposed...either you loved the border, or you hated it. Not much middle ground. 45 comments, and about 2/3 of them expressed dislike for my border choice.
I wanted to at least explain why I chose it. I used a faded black border PS action first, then a faded white border action to kind of draw the attention to the young man in the center (the photo is about him, anyway). Then I used the red border in another layer and faded it to about 40% just to give it a little more "umph." I really loved the way it turned out, and I adore the photo.
Sidebar: The young man in the photo, Daniel, is a 5th grader. He is 11 years old, and has hit FOUR (yes 4) out-of-the-park homers this season so far (in excess of 200 ft.). He is an incredible athlete, and when he pitches, he pitches 75mph consistently. He's wearing a Cardinals helmet with the Indians uniform because he and his cousin share a helmet, and his cousin plays both for the Cardinals (in rec league) and the Indians (select league) this year. His family is so very supportive of him, coming to every single game and bringing extended family with them to watch he and his teammates in action. The boys' parents will be receiving a copy of it soon, as well as a few others I have of him. I'm also making a team DVD slideshow for the parents when the season is over.
By the way, the team won their mid-season Tri County Baseball Association tournament last Saturday, and remains undefeated. Go Indians!!!!

I thought it was a great photo. Gave it a 7. The expressions on those kids are priceless. Unfortunately kids don't do as well as grotesque creatures when it comes to moods. (nothing against the winning and third place photos...they are excellent). |

Laurie,
The chosen border I think actually works for this type of image. Maybe the red is just a little to strong especially where it cuts through two of the boy's faces in the background. Just another opinion. I'm sure his parents will be very pleased with the image.

I never pay attention to the borders, I am not sure what the big fuss is about using or not using them. This should be left up to the photographer and what pleases them.....

Yes, in general that is my take as well. Border choices can add or take away from an image depending on how strong of an impression they have. It's part of the presentation design.

I like the border(s) a lot and it does add to the image, imo. It not only brings more attention to the player, but it says to me "dreams." The dreams kids have of being a star player and being in the spotlight. What strikes me about the border is that you didn't use it strong enough and I think it shouldn't have been faded as much as you did. Imo, the picture has too many kids and some additional cropping should have been done, like cropping out the two kids on the left. Then stronger fade borders would have drawn more attention to the homerun hitter. Just my two cents.
