Just got my bike out in the hall to shoot it for today's PaD, and to prep it for some riding, and I discovered the bottom bracket almost totally stuck (can't turn the pedals). It wouldn't loosen up. I haven't ridden my bike much since I had an accident with it and broke my coccyx about 2 years ago. I'm hoping it's just some sealed bearing seizure and not some other issue. Give me a critique on the shot and make me feel better? (begging)

Oh, no! I am so sorry! I like the "etching" very, very much. I did a similar treatment of an old Ford and still love it. The composition and detail in yours is excellent! I will keep you in my thoughts.

It's a nice shot, of its type. I wonder if it can be done with fewer "bubble imperfections", to look sleeker? Cloning at some point in the process to eliminate all but the key details? I've never done that sort of thing...
Robt.

Well I'm no bike expert, but it definitely looks like the coccyx is still broken, causing the pedals to jam. :)

Time to get your bottom bracket tools out of the closet, open it up and replace the grease or get another set of bearings.
I hope you're all healed up after your injury. How did you wind up breaking your coccyx?
As far as the artwork you put up, I really wish you hadn't converted it to line art. I would have enjoyed seeing the photograph. As it is now, it looks like an illustration. |

dude, I can relate.
I have a nice mountain bike, (Specialized Stump Jumper FXC). the price tag is more than my camera, and gear when it was brand new.
I fell off a 12 step ladder two years ago. Messed up my hand good. Disability for 21 months, surgery, blah, blah. I'd rather crash my pony, than fall from a ladder any day.
I have been looking at my bike lately. Almost 20 lbs fatter than the last time I rode my bike. I am almost intimidated. But I know I must ride my pony again, or old age will win, and my bike won't get fresh air, and exercise.
Just wanted to relate.
Nice pix, good blacks, and whites. Nice cut out, pencil look.

Nice conversion, with good detail and form. I think there might be a typo in your name, BikeTracer. ;-) |

@ Kylie: Thanks!
@ bear_music: Thanks, I was going to work on it some more, but I couldn't decide which way to go with it. I tried making it sleek by selectivly blurring the non-lines, but I didn't like the effect.
@ kpriest: amazingly, the x-ray of my ass looked exactly the same. =]
@ buzzrock: Thanks. My tailbone. Ouch. my girlfriend tells me I had quite the unique bruise between my (ahem) cheeks.
@ Olyuzi: I know, I know. But, I just wanted to dust it off, pump up the tires, sterilize the bottles, and wedge myself into lycra 2 sizes too small, and be off. How'd I break it? Well, don't ride down a hill, with a hidden-by-foliage stop sign, on wet pavement that's covered in petals and leaves - into the side of an approaching car. =[ But, it could be a LOT worse -- my girlfriend could find out that I wasn't wearing my helmet at the time. =]
@ swinging_johnson_v1: Thanks for relating. Yes, I'm ~30 lbs fatter - and my bike cost a lot more than my cam too.
Thanks all for the comments.

I can relate; I love to ride, but last summer I had two accidents, and I am still hurting from the first one even after physical therapy.
Last year I wrecked both my bike and my wifes bike (took it out when I had a flat).
I am a little more timid about riding this year, but I will work my way back into it, I'll feel comfortable again, and then I'll have another accident. ;)
I like the shot, BTW, very much. I've never tried taking pics of my bike. They do make nice subjects for pics! |

At least you broke your coccyx and not anything opposite to it!

@ scalvert: Thanks! =]
@ riggs: Yes. When I first hit the ground and thought to get up (ya gotta get right back up) I couldn't. This was the first time I'd taken a spill and couldn't get up. Scary.
@ nshapiro: ouch! two bad wrecks in the same year. i'm definitely feeling apprehensive about riding too.
@ brianlh: yes. bike shorts don't offer much protection... =]

Really nice shot. I agree with bear_music about the bubbles though. I think it would present even better with a little more clean-up.
My apologies about your tailbone... OUCH
Great job all around. |

Like the photo. What did you use, please, to get that effect?
Sorry about the tailbone. Did that twice myself (giving birth). Never healed right, kinda lumpy, but no one can tell but me. Hurts if I try to do a sit up without a mat. But why would I want to do that anyway? I'm sure that's more than anyone wants to know ... |

Great Picture. I am a fan of coloring book filters, and the photo is very sharp even with having one. Usually I loose a lot of detail. I've also had a biking accident, broke both arms and busted 3 teeth. It sucks, and I still sit and stare at my bike. Scares me to get back on.

Bah! I've had Olympic scale bike accidents... been hit by a car, crossed a busy intersection on my knees while holding my bike over my head (that was a good one), been pulled over by the highway patrol, just beat a train, etc. and I've never broken a thing. The only reason I don't ride much anymore is that they've made all the hills steeper. Whew!

Nice shot. I like it. And I'm glad to see you use SRAM chain. (I work for SRAM!) |

@ SJCarter: Thanks!
@ soup: yeah, I guess I'll just have to replace it. =[
@ woohoopepper: The effect is in photoshop. It's Find Edges in the filters menu. I sharpened after that with usm.
@ Hardcore Poser: ouch!
@ Zap228: ouchouch!
@ scalvert: i've had a bunch of badish bike accidents, but, that was my first (and only, so far) bone break.
@ Keith Maniac: Cool! They're my fav, except for this one chain I had years ago. It was totally impractical - a hollow link chain from Regina. It looked great when it was clean. Too bad it wore out about 5x faster than regular chains.
BTW, here's the original (pretty much) shot:

If I'd broken my ass riding a bike I'd throw the bike in the garage too ;)
so how does it feel to brake your ass ?
I've broken most bones in my body, but never my ass.. |

After being collared and boarded and riding in an ambulance, after lying in lots of pain and being wheeled from hospital room to room, after being asked to turn every which way for the x-ray tech to get a good shot of my ass, it was finally time to get up and leave. I couldn't. I had to ask the doctor who'd been evaluating me to help me get up. Even then, it was awful. Surprisingly standing was most painful, sitting was much less so. The doc wouldn't give me anything stronger than advil because I'd indicated that I might be driving later.
So, to answer your question: Just really tender, and strange feeling in the actual break zone, but the main thing was what it did to my entire back -- totally weakened it. It's like it doesn't hurt until you try to move or do anything that might involve some connective tissue moving past (or pulling) on the area.

Having broken my coccyx not once, not twice, not thrice, but FOUR TIMES....I feel your pain! One rollerskating accident, one horseback riding accident, one childbirth and one clumsy fall down the stairs later...it still hurts if I sit for any period of time. Hope yours is feeling better.
p.s. Love the photo! I have a raleigh hybrid that I use to toodle around the lake near our house. Need to get on it, just been too lazy! |
