Shot a few inside looking out shots today and bracketed to try for detail in the doorway and brightness on the inner walls. Is there any good software out there for this type of stacking? (not astrophotography)
Or, is there a technique in PS that you can share? Any tips?
Thanks in advance,
Ara

i'm totally dragging and need to get to bed, but check out the blending modes in photoshop to see what you're after.
also don't be afraid to use some image masks so that the parts of your image that you want to pop are revealed while the rest are covered up.
i can probably reply in more detail tomorrow. |

A good tutorial (Digital Blending) can be found at Luminous Landscape.
Photoshop CS2's Merge to HDR feature is also fantastic: highly recommend for this type of work. |

Keep in mind that this process is not legal in a challenge.

Ok, thanks - I didn't think PS would be the app of choice, but I'm glad it is. |

yes, this is true. good point.

good luck, bikeracer.

So, here are my first attempts at blending exposures:
The first is the "painted by hand" layer mask technique from LL. With the second shot(s), the mask was created by applying a gaussian blur to the bright image and using that as a mask for the dark image.
Registration wasn't perfect, but it's hard to see at 640.
Thanks for the help,
Ara

i think this are both quite good. the shadow on the first one looks a bit fake for some reason. maybe because the arch of the doorway is the same color as the floor? looks like someone just spraypainted the iron pattern on the ground.

Thanks! I've since re-worked it a bit. Here is another try:

Quite an amusing process to watch for people who have "show signatures" turned off (like me!). ;-)

Yeah, I figgered as much. =] I wonder what the stats are for on vs. off. Anyway, check it out, I've tried to make it both nice and unobtrusive for those of us who leave sigs turned on.

Really like the second one. Using the bright image as the source for the mask seems to be the way to go for this image. The result looks great.
The "merge to HDR" feature may be the one that makes the CS2 upgrade worth it for me. I'm going to d a bit more research though, since most of what I want to do could easily be done in CS. |

Thanks! It's definitely a technique worth working on as I think it will improve my dodging and burning skills as well.
