Coming in to add my congratulations. You have a well deserved ribbon on your image, which is crisp, calm, clear and colourful, with exactly the right kind of 'minimalism' to meet the challenge - but is anything BUT minimal (in that it, for me, is able to evoke a good feeling from one's inner depth) on viewing.
Well done Robt.

Yes, either Row-bear has gone mainstream and sold out or the voters have finally gotten artsy...

Either way, a big congrats to ya!

Seriously, it's good to see him on the front page. Great work Row-bear!

Fear not, see my current "Night" shot and my soon-to-be-posted "Dreams" entry for a return to your regular programming :-)

It was a happy confluence of my sensibilities with a challenge topic. When I saw this topic I said to myself "Ward, if you can't ribbon this one you can't NEVER ribbon..." Of course, I said that with my Ansel, too... But those are my two highest-ranked entries, so....

And actually, to be fair, I'm getting the sense that the voters are getting more receptive to "art" lately, so you may be right. Ed's 4th place image in this challenge is one that rewards introspection, and nearly ribboned despite an utter lack of eye-candy appeal. Even my 3rd place ribboner is a little "edgy" compositionally; I received remarks about the odd ripples upper left and the juxtaposition of the skiff with the reflections, but both were actually carefully thought-out and completely intentiuonal; I had "safer" versions but elected to fo with this one.

For a DPC entry to ribbon requires only that the image have broad appeal to the voters, all other considerations are null. Robt's winning entry is clearly reminiscent of Claude Monet's impressionist work, and, whether intentional or not, caught the voter's eye. That is talent, not luck or perseverence. Some ingredients of talent may be inate, but unless developed will wither before coming to fruition. Robt has worked at his extraordinary craft and talent did not suffer.
Well earned Robt.

Robert IS talented. He has entered 36 challenges since December. I call that perseverance, and I certainly would not mean that in a negative way at all ...

I would call it enthusiasm!

You're right. And it's very addicting. I view the world much differently now that I'm always thinking about photography (if I only didn't have to work - LOL - because I spend most of the day thinking about taking/creating photos) Hopefully, none of my coworkers are DPCers - or I'm in deep trouble!!!!

I'm no Big Shot ribbon winner but I'm right behind you on the rest. Apparently, we shop at the same store.

Cheers

I definitely prefer "enthusiasm" to "perseverance"; for me, the latter implies pursuit of a goal (i.e. a ribbon) and that's not how I see my participation here. I do it because it's FUN. And I have time. I may be poor, but my time's my own.

I can't stress this enough, actually; I'd recommend it to everyone. It's ok to grump a little about scores (I've done it, of course) as long as it's all in good fun. But in the end, set manageable goals (if you need goals at all) and reward yourself with satisfaction when you meet those goals. One of MINE was to have an image that I had not compromised finish over 7.0, and I just accomplished that so I'm a happy camper :-)

Okay you guys win - enthusiasm! I start out that way when I set my mind on a challenge. Then it starts waning as the scores roll in. I don't gripe online (except once when Ken threatened the life of his dog - LOL!). I try to remain positive because I'm learning from all the comments. So,that at least is when I persevere, because I'm not just going to run away with my tail between my legs. I just keep trying. And I do take into consideration at least half of what others comment upon. They quite often see what I don't. It all helps.

I think this is probably the most creative thread, after your self-portrait thread!

I'm so glad to see you on the first page. You actually had it comming a long time ago!
I just hope I didn't come too late for the refreshments!

Congrats on your first ribbon! I'm sure there will be many others following.

Robert,
it's so sad - you were well on the way to become the most favorite unribboned DPC photographer, and you've just ruined it.

My condolences :)

(beautiful photo! the lighting is awesome, and the boat it right where it should be)

Yes, that has occurred to me; now I'm just another 1-ribbon wonder. :-)
