It's gonna be a long time before I collect another ribbon... I'm changing my strategy here and it's gonna slow me down and lower my scores for a while..

Really? How so? I never really thought of myself as having a strategy really for these things, so I'm curious as to what your past and current ones are...

I just hope he does not plan on folling Mr. Jim's strategy.

My strategy is to improve my own creativity. I am the world's worst when it comes to being creative. Each of my submissions from here on out will be something from my own imagination. If it happens to be 'cliche' its because I haven't seen it done before. I'm not saying that I will never submit a photo that hasn't been done, but I'm going to try to be unique.

Sure.. all u gotta do is surf the net looking for cool ideas and then recreate them in your own way with your own twists.

John..you give yourself far too little credit :-)

You gotta know an idea is cool enough to get the attention here then you got to execute. It takes a creative mind to even recognize good stuff. I have seen some folks try to duplicate photos or other media ideas here with a lot less success than you.

My wife bugged me the other day..she said..."So..John beat you again huh?" I said .."umm..yeah...he did...!#$%%##^&&&&!!!****"

She said "well, quit giving him all those 9's and 10's and he'll have a teensy bit harder time"

I said ":-P"

Hokie, yer far too nice :)

Let's just say that it's a personal objective then... I would like to move forward and become a creator of an idea that everyone else wants to copy... My
Queen's Gambit photo is my only real attempt at 100% creativity on this site, and the chessboard theme is not really unique.

If I didn't spend so much time looking at photography, I suppose I would be better off. I want to score a ribbon on something that is completely my own idea. If it happens, then I will have succeeded :)

speaking of ideas to recreate, i saw this picture of this kitten, and behind it was this amazing sunset, and next to it this beautiful orchid. Now where was that ... ? :P

John...I just hope when folks here talk to you or anybody else about being inspired by other ideas that it doesn't force anyone to change what makes photography fun for them or impede their learning by denying them the ability to mimic other stuff. I use ideas from architecture, sculpture and graphic design, some others use ideas directly from other photographers.

Based on what I see you post here I don't think you will do this. You seem to do as you please and that is exactly what everyone should do.

Sometimes the best path to your own style is through someone elses. Just like so called "cliche" shots or "stereotypes". If you are going to build a whole life of photography around what everyone else has already done that may not be the coolest thing but it certainly is a great way to learn and refine technique. If people came to photography with perfect execution, flawless technique and uncanny creativity what are all these books, schools and websites doing around :-)

If you are going to be uncommonly good..you will recognize soon enough if your approach to photography needs to change to meet your goals. Others will disagree and I may be wrong but I have always felt talent was innate and built on desire from within.

IMHO, School, reading and critique just help to expose folks to ideas and refine what was already there in them. This is just my philosophy and I am entitled to it :-P

More power to you, John! I try hard to go with an image I think "speaks for me" regardless of what score I think it will get (e.g. Priceless). Even though we are here to learn and teach, we are also publishing our work, and I''ve never been able to do a really good job on ANY project unless it had some personal relevance.

I went with an image that was original and spoke to me in the city life challenge... it was one of my lowest scores :)

John,

I think I know how you feel, not that it is something that I suffer from. You have used other's work to inspire you, and work on your technique, now you want to start working on your ideas more. I think that plays right into my signature, and is a path many great artists have followed. I look forward to seeing what comes out of it. Alyhough Librty and Justice was not truly your idea, you definitely made it your own, and it is the best example of that theme I have seen.

One of my problems lately is that I have been missing out on doing some of the photos that I really like doing. That's one of the reasons I did not submit to the FEAR challenge. I have been taking some photos that I like to take such as THIS ONE.

I managed to muster up an idea for the open challenge next week so I will start working on it and see what happens. This entry will be somewhat original I think, but I will have to give credit in advance to Hokie for a minor inspiration :)

Wow! "Daisy" is an EXCELLENT picture. Even if it is of a flower. :-) (That''s for the teacher remark on another thread. *grin*)
