I think I want to start a photo club here in my area. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do with it, but I'm interested in the experience of others who belong/have belonged to them.
What did you like?
What irritated you about the club?
What would you have done differently?
What was the cost of the club?
Anything else you would like to chip in, I'm all ears. I'm hoping to bring the DPC experience to a live meeting where I can have actual face to face contact.
I'm looking forward to your input. |

Tell us where you are and you'll probably have a bunch of members. |

I've only been a member of a club for about a year, but here are my answers...
What did you like? - I like being able and comfortable to share my photography with a small group of people and get feedback. I like knowing other photographers in the area. I like the opportunities it provides me without me having to do the legwork (ie. guest speakers, opportunities to display my work, etc. I like that it makes me think about creating more to share since I am obviously abysmal at submitting to challenges here.
What irritated you about the club? - There isn't anyone anywhere near close to my age, which isn't necessarily irritating but it would be nice to have some younger members. I'm currently the only one shooting purely digital which means we don't have a digital projector (yet, although they are slowly coming around). There's a lot of skepticism about digital - I frequently get asked "did you photograph that or make it in Photoshop?" But actually, the most irritating thing is that we spend FOREVER looking at certain photos and it can just drag on. I suppose I'm conditioned by DPC where I can spend exactly the amount of time on each photo that I want, but honestly, I wish they'd speed things up a bit.
What would you have done differently? - I'd like to do more outings and have more guest speakers but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of interest in the group.
What was the cost of the club? - $25

I'm interested in the same thing and I know there isn't a photo club in my immediate area. This is a small town of about 26,000 people. There might be some interest, but since Swedish isn't my native language, I'm a little shy about drumming up a club. However, I'm listening to all the ideas you have for digitalknight - just in case I go for it here!
Edit: Just want to point out that I realize that perfect Swedish isn't required for a photoclub ;-) it's just that I live in Sweden and sometimes feel awkward about my fluency.

I started up a club sponsored by the company I work for. We are allowed to use minimal work resources (printers, email, web space...) and we can can apply for a grant from the company each year. I started it in November and we now have 23 members and have received about $1300 in grants from the company recently (they were generous because we were a new club). We're buying a monitor calibrator, a set of alien bees b800 studio strobes, and a back drop and muslin to fill the club equipment inventory.
What did you like?
I like it because each month we have a meeting with a homework assignment, critique of the homework assignment, and a tutorial given by one of the members. A great opportunity to learn and share. It also allows access to all the club owned equipment and fantastic networking opportunities.
What irritated you about the club?
I had to push pretty hard in the beginning to keep things rolling and keep the club alive, but now it's taken on a life of it's own and it's a lot less work. Sometimes getting people to participate is difficult, but that has gotten much better lately. Getting a few motivated people as members really helps things out.
What would you have done differently?
We are evolving as we go, so no regrets yet. With the studio equipment we are going to look into doing portraits a few times a year to raise some club money. We'll tie in with a charity and donate half the proceeds in exchange for help in marketing the even and a location to hold the event. We also have a gallery show booked for the month of September already, mostly because our company has a good name in the community. We have a great mix of talent, I want to take advantage of that and make the club economically strong. I hope we can be able to help out a few charities and maintian a nice inventory of equipment.
What was the cost of the club?
membership is $10/year and allows you free use of club equipment. considering rental costs of the equipment we will soon have, it's the best bargain in town. Getting a $1300 grant from the company was a great jump start, but I think we would still be fine without that.
If you want more info on how I started it and what we do, let me know and I'll post more later.

What did you like?- I like that we have monthly competitions. At the end of the year, there are prizes (photog of the year, print of the year, slide of the year, etc). I like that I meet new people also in my area. I also like that we have workshops and speakers come in and talk about different forms of photography.
What irritated you about the club?- Our club (unlike some others around PA) doesn't go on outings. I thought this was kinda stinky, as I'd love to go see how others do their work. When I take photos, I always wear my headphones listening to my favorite cd. It puts me in another world, and I can focus like no other. I wanna see how others function out on location. Our club isnt very digital oriented, 95% of our club is film and they dont really get digital. Then again 95% of the folks at club are age 50+.
What would you have done differently?
There are things I would change, I'd have more assisgned subject competitions than open subjects, make things more difficult.
What was the cost of the club?
Our Dues are $30 for the entire season (9 months)

This is my photo club:
I only use on photos that scored below the 50 percentile.
What did you like? - It's effective and a stress reducer.
What irritated you about the club? - it chaffed my fingers until I put some duct tape around where I hold it.
What would you have done differently? - Drive sharp nails through it.
What was the cost of the club? - Free. I cut it from a fallen tree branch. |

What?? I obviously don't have any free time for that!! ;-)
Seriously, no. Not sure what they do. I like informal meetups or GtGs though. I'd be up for that sometime up here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest where it hasn't rained nearly all day today! ;-) |

This is going to be a long post. Iâm heavily into Photochrome, a Club of some 60 years standing. The cameras have changed, the enthusiasm has stayed. (Caveat, Iâm secretary of the Club and, starting in January 2005, write the newsletter, Color News. All my issues are on line.) We have an excellent website noted above.
Itâs a mix of traditional (read film/slide photographers) and digital (you know what that is). Digital images can, of course, be transferred to slides, and as such qualify to be entered in slide competitions. It also features Print photography once a month. All meetings are competition meetings, with one exception discussed later. Competing members are assigned a level, starting withâBâ. They work their way up through theâAâ, âAAâ, âAAAâ and finally Masters. They compete in five categories:
Pictorial (anything goes)
PhotoJournalism
Travel
Creative
Nature
Judges are certified by a Bay Area Council of 14 Camera Clubs called Northern California Council of Camera Clubs. (N4C) and rarely come from the club holding the competition.
Winning images and prints are sent on to N4C where they enter competition with the winners from the other N4C clubs. (Who me, brag? Heh, heh. One of my Creative images took Creative Slide of the Year in that competition last year)
The competition exception is Digital. It is still fairly new in our Club and we hold Exhibitions two times each month when members bring in files on CDs or USB Flash Drives. They are projected on our brand-new Canon Digital Projector and the maker discusses how the image was accomplished. Itâs a learning experience for everyone.
There is one other competition. Itâs classless and does not advance to N4C. Something of a mindstretcher (like DPC) subjects (âPinkâ, âHatsâ, âGraffitiâ, etc. are selected at the beginning of the year. All competing members are invited to submit one slide/print to these competitions and winners are selected by the judge of the evening.
Okay, enough. Most everything else is located on line at
Photochrome.Org, put out by our excellent webmaster, Jim Goldstein, who happens to be President of the club this year.
Glad to answer more questions, if you have them. Okay, I can't imbed the URL in the message but it does show up at the end of my message. I'm using a laptop with which I am only fairly familiar. My Dell is getting a lobotomy as my nice (relatively new) harddrive is sick.

Ah, that reminds me: The Photographic Society of America has a fairly complete listing of USA clubs.
From the main page, go to About PSA, then Service and Activities, then Affiliations, then Clubs. (I tried a bunch of times to post the link to that particular page. Sorry, it wouldn't take) So, just go hunting. |
