I am new to Adobe Photoshop, and do not know much regarding Layers, levels, curves etc.
Can someone tell me how to learn the Photoshop basics?

Play. Read. Play more. Read more. etc.

There are lots of photoshop books available. Do a search in the forums (currently driven by google) and you should find several threads related to this.

Follow the basic tutorials that come with Photoshop.

I have found that books are not of much help. DPC tutorials are excellent, but they do not cover every aspect. Can someone tell some links for systematic learning the Photoshop basics?

Everyone learns differently so what exactly are you looking for in terms of instruction? If it's the purpose of a particular tool rather than how to apply it then a google search on Photoshop and the name of the tool could possibly provide the info you are looking for.

What version of photoshop are your using? Is it the full version or Elements?

The tutorials here are mainly task driven instead of tool driven like a lot of books. There are a few books out that are task driven, most recommended around here is the photoshop for digital photographers book. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact name but I'm sure someone else will fill that information in quickly.

one book to have is 'Digital Compositing for film and video" by Steve Wright.

this is a great PS extra to learn stuff photoshop manuels just don't cover.

DVGarage.com, and PixelCorps.com are great sites for more info, and tuts on disc.

cnet.com offers serveral online courses free. I just finished a cousre for PS7, even though I run PS6, it was still very helpful.

I see you're in India. Is there a school or university near you that might offer short courses in Photoshop. Or perhaps informal classes of some kind? A brief introduction is probably all you need to understand how the program works. Then all those books start to make sense.

Explore, play a little. Open an image in PS and move the sliders in the Levels window until you get a good idea of what this does. Do the same with Curves, sharpen via Unsharp Marsk (enlarge the image to 100% to actually see what it does to detail, play with Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation and, perhaps, Shadow/Highlight. Apply the Crop tool too. It's easy. See (for now) what you can do with these tools only. When you're happy with the result, open the Image Size window and learn to fill in/check just the right values/boxes. Then go to file and select Save for Web, learn what the options mean and Save. Presto.

If you're intimidated by PS, learn one tool, one effect at a time. It adds up eventually. In three years you will know enough to make capable editing improvements on the best shots entered here. :-) If you don't have three years, well, you need to pay a good teacher.

I know you said books don't help however I've been going through several sections of

Photoshop CS Savvy
by Stephen Romaniello

and it may be just what you are looking for. It explains what a tool is used for and what the results will be when applied to a photograph. There is an accompanying CD which has the sample images on which you can use the steps outlined in the book.

The book also goes into some depth about what certain things are used for like layers, levels and curves.
