Though in the context of sports photography, 'DSLR' is being used as a shorthand for a camera with quick autofocus, very low shutter lag, the ability to interchange lenses (particularly long, fast [i.e., large aperture] telephotos) and highish frame rates.
You certainly can shoot sports with a sony 717, you'll just have to get good at predicting when something interesting will happen and prefocus on where it will happen. For certain sports this is easier than with others.
Another advantage of using an SLR is the much larger, optical viewfinder which lets you easily see if the subject is in focus or not. |

Heh heh. Open mouth, insert foot. So then it appears, looking at y'alls' cameras that EOS's and D70's are the sports photographer's weapon of choice? I feel like such a noob...course, I am noob... |

Hey don't sweat it. I started out photographing motorsports with a Fuji 602 which is pretty much the same spec as your 717. It's a little harder to capture what you want, but it's certainly still possible.
