I'd take a crack at it if nobody any better offered. Might get kind of unwieldy though...

Be careful with Brad - I gave him my Bridge picture awhile back to fix up some of the mistakes - fingers in front of lense, bad focus, over-burned on right side, oversaturated, etc.:
...and although he totally denies it, he fixed it up, entered it as his own and won a yellow ribbon!
Come on Brad - everyone can see how friggin obvious it is.

Brad,
You are VERY talented. What do you do for a living? We are looking for another color management member and digital image tech.

Post-processing on both of these was:
Rex's shot, basically first step was to go to Adjustments, levels and click options to set levels and see what it looks like, often changing highlights to 0.0
Then it came down to studying what I wanted to change, basically the yellow. In Adjustments, Hue/Saturation, I dropped down to the Yellow, moved the Hue to the right a bit and the aturation to the left a bit, then dropping the lightness down and watched the changes. A "bit" is typically 10 pts, but never over 20, as weird things seem to happen when the 20 threshold is crossed. I may repeat the same step again, as two minor changes are better than one big change. Then went to adjustments, selective Color, dropped down to the Green and slid the bottom (black) slider over to add black to the green, again in 2 steps (maybe - I forget). Went back into Hue/Saturation and brought the green saturation up a bit (20 or less) and brought it's lightness down. Hue/Saturation again, brought the Reds up a little. Back to Adjustments, Selective, this time going to the White channel and slid the Balck all the way over, cutting out some of the overcast sky. Typically adjust brightness & contrast for the final image.
In André's image, different criteria dictated the workflow as such:
I wanted to bring the Blue out in the sky, so went to Adjustments, Hue/Saturation, Cyan, and slid the Saturation all the way to the right to see what parts fall into the Cyan realm. Not much change, so I did teh same with the Blue this time, and adjusted to get the color intensity I wanted without over-doing the jeans. Then Hue/Saturation, checked the same way with Red & Yellow to see what parts of the image I was affecting, adjusting the Yelllows up and it's lightness down, added Red Saturation, bring the lighness down a little, then went back to the Yellow and slid the Hue over to the right just a little to adjust for the skin tone. Adjusted Brightness & Contrast a little to suit.
None of this came from books. It is what happens when an inquisitive mind wants to know what "this does, and that does" and after a couple years of fiddling with images, I've derived a decent feel for finding ways around getting a digital image to appear the way I would expect or want it to.
A couple key things for anyone new to editing:
1) If you change a sky for instance, and add 20pts of Saturation to the Blue, add the exact same amount to the Cyan, and they are neighbors and you won't be left with blotchy patches in the sky, especially after increasing contrast. Wanna bring the Blue sky deeper & richer, get into the selectives and add black to the Blue & Cyan channels.
2) What we see as Green, is actually mostly Yellow. To find out, slide the Yellow saturation all the way over and check what parts of the image you are affecting in your editing. You will be amazed at how little Green is really in the original.
3) Don't be afraid to try something. You can't break it, and you will often find you will learn more by trying something hands on than anything else. (just don't forget to work with a copy of the image or never save back over itself)
Sometimes I feel like I haven't a clue what I'm doing in PS, especially when I read about layers & masks & such and what some can do with an image. What I am posting hee is kinda' PS 101 I learned by the seat of the pants way late in the game, but it does make it fun to take an old image and go back and make adjustments and see how much better they look now as compared to then.
Ramble, ramble ramble.... LOL |

Brad, your very nice to help everyone this way. I still use the sharpening action you posted (steps) in another thread, and it works great on images for posting. Ok, that's all the serious stuff I'm going to say.
Now, here's the contest: Brad will go through and fix ALL the shots in the Abandoned Building challenge. Then we'll revote them ;)
Or if you prefer, you can wait until the free study is over and do those ;) |

*Blush*
I'm flattered. About the only thing I could effectively manage color-wise right now is the color in my cheeks and am desperatly trying to get some of the red out of them.
Actually I am an auto mechanic Master Automotive Technician (sounds more better huh - LOL) and have my own shop.
Made my day Jewelie, Thanks! |

I would also like to throw some accolades Brad's way, (sorry Brad, I'm fresh out of cash to throw!), Brad gave me a couple of suggestions on my Abandoned Building shot and it was so much closer to what I wanted it to look like! I'm kind of new to this Digital Darkroom stuff, and I just kind of poke and prod around in PS9 until I get close. Brad's further comments from this thread are going to be printed and posted next to the computer for my next editing session! I think you deserve all of the ribbons you have received and maybe a few more that you didn't get. Thanks again for taking the time to give detailed comments that help us new guys!

I co-teach an advanced Digital Photography class. My counter part, Lynda, doing the photo and me doing the Photoshop. I am not as available as Brad, but I do have a couple PDFs on color correction in Photoshop. Please email me if this interests any one. It is pretty basic stuff....like skin tone in a white person should be more yellow than magenta and cyan about 1/3 or less the magenta, how to use levels and curves, and similar topics. I haven't used it in a couple months, but I need to dig it out for summer session anyway.
My email is swartwout@invisimax.com.

Hi Jen,
The shots you see here have been the hyperlink thumbnails of images used in either a challenge or are in a member's porfolio and have a unique file ID number:
To add that clickable thumbnail into a post:

Maybe you worked on the flower too much and it became a sunset. ;-)
I didn't see any flowers posted in your portfolio. You need to upload there first, then reference your image ID |
