Wow, what a generous offer John, I'm inspired!

Whilst I'm certainly not in the same league as John, I'm also willing to give some 1 on 1 help under the same conditions, maybe having another pair of eyes and someone to discuss things with would help - I know that it did for me and I'm happy to pass on the goodwill :)

I'd also suggest getting Hello as a photo based IM (although not essential).

well I think there are a lot of us here who would love to take up this offer and may the bestman/woman win. Good on you John,
I belong to a print circle, we have 10 members thu out N.Z. we put in two images each round and they are critiqued by each other member . I find the feed back and the compitition helpful, it certainly helps improve ones photography,.

I would love to have taken up John's offer, but I am going into hospital tomorrow for a couple of weeks and then having six weeks recovery at home.

Perhaps the offer will come around again later in the year.

Hmmm...I didn't think I fit the criteria until someone pm'd me about this. I was reading the thread last night and decided I would not fit with my one 6.057, but if that counts as a 6.0, I will take the help.

Is this close enough:

Sixteen challenges, avg. 5.25, 6+ twice, don't have Yahoo Messenger, will pay $50???

Oh, just fooling around of course. Hat's off to you for your willingness to be so helpful. You set a good example for us all!

While we are on the subject. Can anyone recommend good tutorial books with step by step advice? Like an idiots guide to photography type of thing.

You can find some pretty helpful online courses to take. I registered for one through my local college and learned some helpful basics. The course I took was fairly inexpensive $60.00?? if I recall correctly. //www.ed2go.com/

I still have some mixed feelings about unlimited amounts of help going into a challenge shot. I'll say I haven't reached a final conclusion on it, and am trying to keep an open mind. However I am very pleased with the manner in which John is offering to share his considerable expertise. Being done out in the open and to anyone meeting a set of criteria seems to make it a lot more palletable. Someone is going to benefit from this. Thank you John, for another new and stimulating idea.

I would love some help but I don't qualify since some of my photos scored above a 6 :( but that was years ago! Does that count?
04/19/2005 11:25:28 AM · #37
Hmmm...
Over 20 challenges...39
Under 5.2 average...below 5.0...4.958
Highest scoring pic was 6.0...OK, 6.020. But that was over a year ago..a fluke I tell ya! It was only my 4th challenge, what did i know? And why did i forget it?
Point me to Yahoo...

If anyone else wants a mentee let me know!

Shannon was the first person to post who met the criteria. I will be working with her for a while. Thanks for the input.

I have a victim....eerrr...I mean someone to help :)

Come on, I'm sure that there are many others on this list that can offer their services to those willing to listen, don't worry about being at John's level, just having some appreciation for how things work around here will certainly appreciated by those that are looking for inspiration. I've put myself forward and I'm pretty damn certain that there are plenty with a profile like mine (or even better), do something good - help a fellow photographer today :)

....and thanks again to John for starting yet another good thing!

I benefited greatly, second hand, from John when he did this for my wife awhile back. Shannon, get ready to learn a lot!

John, you might not know it, but you and my wife created a monster. I went from simply carrying a P&S camera on hikes to actually starting up a photo club where I work that elected me president and now has 23 paid members! Thanks!

perhaps we should setup an irc channel for dpcers... as good as forum posts are, live feedback i've always felt is better. you can get to know people a lot better when they are engaging in conversation live.

just a thought. i'd be happy to setup something if anyone is interested. if we could get some of the better photographers on this site to contribute their knowledge by being operators in these channels, i think the benefits would certainly outweigh any costs (monetary or not)

Perhaps 2 or 3 of us dregs of the photo world could get together and be a self study group for a few challenges and see if we can self mentor ourselves into being better, er, higher scores.

Anyone game?

Congrats Shannon - John is an EXCELLENT mentor/teacher. Absorb what he has to say and you will learn a lot. I wish I still had the time to talk with John as I used to - but he taught me so much and I'll never forget.

Now if I could just get the time to pick up the camera again! I miss the update button. :-)
