For those who don't – here's a synopsis. Last April I attended a trip referred to as the first annual Festival of Wildlife (organised by a company called Wildlife Worldwide). Some proceeds from that trip went to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and there was also an auction during the trip, hosted by David Shepherd himself. When I got back I wanted to help raise funds so, with the support of Drew and Langdon, I sold prints of photos from that trip on DPC Prints. The project came to a close at the end of February and raised £980 GBP. The second festival was looming and I called the guys at Wildlife Worldwide to let them know about the end of the project (they'd been very supportive) and anyways, they asked if I'd bring some of the prints along to put into this year's charity auction. I said yes straight away and had the prints done locally (no time to wait for postage from the US) but I was so nervous as everything else in the auction was from the numerous experts attending the festival.

Anyway, I took along matted prints of Blue and Gold, Tomboy and In his Prime and gave them to Wildlife Worldwide on arrival for sale in this auction. It was held on the last night of the Galapagos boat cruise section of the trip. I was soooo scared no one would bid but a couple of friends agreed to bid a fiver if no one did so they wouldn't be left unsold. There were about 10 people who attended the last festival present but most people didn't know me from that and certainly my items were the only things in the auction (except a place on next year's trip) that weren't from/ by celebrities.

I just wanted to shrink into the cracks of the sofa!

Wellâ€Â¦

Blue and Gold went for £30 (to one of my childhood TV heroes who said he will put it in his office, though I think he bought it just to be kind to me and to participate in the auction).

In his prime went for £30 (to a descendant of Darwin who had come along to share his knowledge of Darwin's life and work. He bought it for his wife who he said loves big cats and he's planning a safari for the family so it may be inspiration for that).

Tomboy, went for £360!! There was a real bidding war! The lady who won it had attended the last festival too and it reminded her of that plus she loves lions and lion cubs especially.

Just after the winning bid, the owner of Wildlife Worldwide ran up to me and asked if I'd be willing to get another print of Tomboy done for the losing bidder if she agreed to pay same price as the winner had just bid. Of course, I agreed straight away!

So my prints raised £780 which will be split between DSWF and a Galapagos based wildlife charity.

AND! AND! AND! There were many other lots in the auction such as signed limited edition art prints from the Scotts, a photo print from them, a small bird painting by Jonathan Truss, a large sea painting done by Truss during the cruise and loads of signed posters, prints, books etc signed by all the experts. None went for as high as £360.

The only two things that went for more than Tomboy were a place on next year's festival (went for nearly 4k and had a reserve of 3k set anyway) and a private commission from Truss (worth about 10k, reserve of 2.5k and went for nearly 3k).

I know this sounds like I'm bragging and I'm really not, or at least I'm not intending to. Actually I'm still kind of in shock. Several people told me afterwards that during bidding I sat there with this utter look of disbelief on my face like I was wondering WHY! They were right! I just was so expecting the opposite and no one has ever wanted anything that I created before, not to this kind of extent. People have paid small fry for my prints every now and then, mostly to contribute to my charity project rather than because of a real desire to own the printsâ€Â¦ this was different!

OK, I'll stop now! Thanks for listening!

Well done, Kavey. What better way to sell your photos than for a good cause. Shame more people don't give so freely, but just think money all the time. You will be rewarded for your generosity.

But!! John Craven! That is sad :(

At least my childhood hero/fantasy was Susan George :)

What an amazing story Kavey.

I'm so glad for you it looks like you have arrived and you didn't even know what the destination was.

Congratulations, it sounds like that would make a great signed limited edition collection.

Kavey, we have a saying here in the states that goes something like this -"It ain't bragging if you can back it up." Your modesty is matched only by your generosity.

I wouldn't feel right making it limited edition given that I sold a load of Tomboy prints for the charity project already...

But thanks!

I don't know that I've arrived anywhere special but it's a beginning... I hope... of a journey to somewhere...

Oh my god. I burst out laughing when I saw the first £360 ... not because it was funny, but I think my brain didn't know what to do so it just picked something. I'm still spinning!

My new childhood hero (because I haven't grown up yet) is Kavey.
And I've met her.
AND! AND! AND! I've been round for coffee.

You should be very proud Kavita, well done.

Don't feel weird! Just think of all the great things that will come with the money you've raised either through the auction or through the sales of your prints. A lot of people will say something should be done about things they proclaim to believe in -- it's another to act. You've take action. Be proud!
