Well, just dropping off this short note to tell you all that Iâm taking a break from DPChallenge. I think I really need it.
Iâve been finding for some time now that DPC isnât stimulating me the way it used to in the past. I find most challenge subjects of late very uninspiring. Iâm also finding that I am no longer taking pictures for myself, but for the challenge topics, which seems to be taking much of the pleasure out of the whole experience. I never even got inspired for Free Study VIII.
I have also realized that I have become way too gear focused. By this I mean that Iâm spending more time obsessing over which piece of equipment I want to purchase next rather than concentrating on becoming a better photographer. So, I am in the process of revising my equipment list to determine what I have, what Iâd like to have and what I really need. Probably going to sell some of the gear that I hardly use. I have also realized that my techniques, both shooting and post-processing, need a swift kick in the pants, so Iâll also take the opportunity to hit the books. I may drop by every now and them to pick your brains regarding good reference material.
Anyway, I will continue taking photos when I feel like it, but it will be a secondary activity to others such as hiking, camping, traveling and taking care of my house and the people I love. I have really neglected all these elements of my life since getting a bit more âseriousâ with the camera. Time to get back to basics.
Anyway, my absence will affect little since Iâm mostly a âmiddle of the packâ and âdonât even realize heâs thereâ kind of guy. Hope everyone has a really good spring and Iâll see you in a few months I guess.
Later.

You'll be missed ... and you've stated some issues I've been pondering for a while. Sometimes it's hard to decide if "always shooting for the challenges" is hurting me or helping me.Plus, I've also become an equipment junky (even though I don't have much equipment).
Free Study's also come up, I hope decide at least to play those from time to time ... I enjoy your photography very much. |

After browsing your gallery I would not agree with this statement .. however your priorities are definately in the right place and if I was lucky enough to be living with my family and children then for sure I'de do the same thing, they grow up too fast.
You're a good photographer but I imagine you must be a better father with a kind heart for the feeling you have.. I would like to wish you luck and have a good time with your family.. |

I have taken away a lot of your post to put emphasis on this. Family and friends should be the most important in anyones life. I hope everyone remembers that. You will be missed and look forward to seeing you return.

Have fun Denis, you *will* be missed.
See ya when the DPC elastic band that D&L stapled to you gets too strong and drags you back : )

I had a similar experience, but decided to stick around... For one thing, the value offered by the DPC Prints service can't be matched. I've looked, and smugmug is closest, but more expensive. Printroom.com is third in line, having more ideal services, but significantly more cost. I keep my fingers crossed that the DPCPrints.next rumours will come true and make it even better. Since print sales easily pay for membership, it's easy to hang in there.
These days I enter challenges when they align with current projects, but no longer enter every one. I find more than enough challenge just using Nature and Landscape as a theme, and working within self-defined projects.
To each their own, but in case you didn't already, give it another thought. There's a lot more to DPC than the challenges. I've got a list of "ignored threads" that goes on for miles because I don't care about challenge threads or major equipment digressions. Still, there's an amazing community here, and some of the members galleries are very inspiring to me, so I keep returning to them.
Either way... Best wishes to you, and may your highlights never blow out ;)

Been through the roller coaster a few times here myself, and did start shooting for myself first - made a big difference in personal satisfaction.

Good for you. Artists can't be told to produce on demand, and this for of art isn't much different. Becomes an obsessive challenge to try too.

Taking a break is one thing, and departing forever is another. Please don't do the later.
And besides, jacko might get all big-headed without you to bring him back to earth occasionally.
Enjoy your break but don't let it last too long.

Good Luck! I have fallen in love with photography all over again, once I let up on the challenge shooting and started shooting from the heart.
I hope you find your happiness! |

Hopefully, you will feel rested up and unburnt out soon and will want to return. Everyone needs a vacation once in a while, it really changes your outlook on things.
It is really easy to get obsessed with shooting to meet the challenge. At the beginning of the year, I decided to shoot what I wanted and enter it and not care what score it gets and that has really been relaxing. I've had some real bombs so far this year but also ended up with my highest score ever in the last challenge.
So, hurry back after you get the vacation you need! |

| Haven't been around DPC long, but will still miss you on the threads and challenges. Sometimes ya just gotta take a step back and take a good look. Usually, that is a significant growth period, should be interesting.... Have fun and be free |
