I thought I'd post a photo to tear apart for learning purposes.
Do you like this composition? Be blunt and answer why or why not.

I think it would have been better if the cow was at the bottom right corner (because of the direction the cow is at) and maybe if the tree was not so centered...one thing that i like is the lighting....hope that helped?

No, I don't think it's an effective composition at all. Leave the cow out of it and it's totally static, divided into quadrants of even weight. The addition of the cow does little to justify the otherwise-static composition. There's a real conflict between the cow and the tree, each of which is laying some claim to being the focus of the image. The OOF buildings in the BG, while perhaps meant to give context to the image, succeed mostly in being serious visual distractions. This is especially true of the bright portion of the shed to the left of the tree trunk, which is precisely at the center of the image.
Here's a crop 'n clone job that works better, IMO;

Here, the composition appears cluttered - with competing focal points between the tree in the dead center and the cow lost in the lower left quadrant. Additionally the building in the background is distracting. On the plus side, color saturation on the grass is great and focus is sharp on the foreground. This particular shot doesn't appeal to me as much as the other one of this location in your portfolio.

Thanks for the responses. Nice crop, bear. :D
I'm not looking for anything in particular. Just thought it might be helpful to discuss composition. There seem to be a lot of newbies on the site. |

That cow is walking out of the picture taking me with it. A subject facing out of the picture at it's edge is discomforting. It would work if there were a Lion in the background chasing it, but that tree looks fairly non-threatening. If the cow were turned, and walking into the frame that would make for a better result. It is fairly busy and elements that my eye wants to see, are unfocused. This photo is a good lesson in making sure you define what you want to portray, checking your settings, determine your depth of field, quick mental check of business of what is in the rest of the frame, distractions etc and framing it in such a way as to be pleasing before releasing the shutter.
