I am having problems here in Washington the last two days also. A recording yesterday at Comcast said that they are having globel internet connection problems. At times I am down and then back up again... There are so many calls to Comcast that you can`t even get to the main first recording. They replaced it with "can`t take your call right now and please try later"... |

Switch to another DNS server....Find one you want to use...
Click Start, Control Panel.
Double click Network Connections.
If you don't know which connection you use, this is where you'll have to just double click each icon until one pops up that says "Status: Connected"
Under General, click Properties
Under 'This connection uses the following items', locate 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and select it.
Click Properties.
Check the radio button 'Use the following DNS Server addresses' and manually enter the IP's there.

I have windows XP -- not sure how different it would be with 98 or NT or 2000 or whatever, but should be near the same I would imagine.

I've had the same problems. Don't forget if you use a router, you'll need to make the DNS change there. I changed mine to UUNet, 198.6.1.2 and it flies now. |

There are reports of a DNS Spoofing attack that started a month or so ago and has been reinfecting DNS Cache servers. Lately we have seen a huge increase in spyware infestations at our customer's sites and massive network performance hits, I doubt this is sheer spam.
Very long read, but if you're a techhead, it is quite interesting to know about this stuff.

I was reading about that yesterday...Comcast denies that the DNS server problems are completely unrelated to any hackers or anything of the like. Personally, I have a hard time believing that. Think about what would happen if the general public found out big old Comcast 'got hacked' -- they'd be up in a frenzy -- they'd turn their computers off and might never return because 'if they can get Comcast, they can get me' etc.
Really, and again, I was doing some reading (I'm dangerous when I read), it doesn't seem like it's that tough of a thing to do. If I understand correctly they're basically just tricking some server somewhere that holds all the hostnames to IP's to point a certain hostname to a different IP -- then I guess Comcast's security catches on and shuts their communications to that dns server down or whatever. Now I'm not saying I can do that by any means, but I'm surprised people didn't start doing that sort of thing a long time ago.

AdAware found 58 things which it fixed. There are like 5 processes named "scvhost.exe" running in my Processes -- 3 SYSTEM, 1 LOCAL SERVICE and 1 NETWORK SERVICE.
There's a lot of goofy things in there. It's like my computer won't load any pages other than DPC and even that, I have to originally click WORK OFFLINE then click it again to get it going.
I have sygate personal firewall, and there is really no data incoming or outgoing...but I checked my security logs, and it said someone tried scanning my ports.

Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's TCP ports:
4444, 2745, 3140, 80 and 443 have been scanned from 67.165.173.165.
-----------------------------------------
I tried backtracing that IP and apparently it just goes back to Comcast??? Any reason Comcast would scan my ports?
What exactly is someone trying to gain by scanning my ports? Any way of knowing what they found when they scanned my ports? Whether they got in or whatever? |
If ever in doubt about any processes running on your computer, here is a link that will help.
Process Library Search
I use this all the time when I see a wierd process running. Hope it helps. I have Comcast and have been having DNS problems as well. This link won't help that, but I have caught a few Ad/Spyware processes running on my computer using this link.

I am on comcast in PA near the ohio border and have had no probs. A friend of mine on greentree rd in pgh has had problems - several times this week.
sometimes i have to reboot my router and cable modem (every couple of months) not sure why, but no 'net access is the reason i do it, and then all works fine.
comcast/cable modems are a network - could be they are upgrading, under atack, fired someone who is now seeking revenge...who knows. I have received no emails from them advising of upcoming service issues...
As for having your ports scanned - not too unusual - some websites 'push' time or date at you so even if you have surfed on, it may be truying to post data to you. also, comcast will ping occasionally to see if you are there.
