After getting lower that I thought I would for my Rubberduck shot, my confedence was shaken, I asked a couple of friends which of these shots I should enter into abandoned buildings. They said neither enter the 3rd one I didn't like (nothing like these). At the moment its running about 5.7 (I thought it'd be lucky to break 5). Were they right, are either of these better than 5.7, I just don't know anymore - please help :)

You know what they say about friends don't you???
You can pick your nose and you can pick your friends but you can't pick your friends nose.

It´s always good to get advice but still, wouldn´t you rather stand or fall with your own grounds rather than your friend´s? I quickly learned to not show anyone my shots before entering them because I only want to be able to blame myself if it doesn´t go over very well or on the flip side if I do well be 100% sure it was me that too the credit for having made it and chose the shot and not someone else. Every time I showed someone else my shot I started second guessing myself and that´s not good.
However, asking this after the challenge is over is another story alltogether, it can get you good tips on how to improve your photography. |

Well I really quite like the second one and would have likely scored it an 8. Filling the frame with the grill combines well with the graffiti in the background. Having said that it's still hard to tell how it would have scored ... I think you probably would have been somewhere above 5.5 with that - but voters are really unpredicatable!
Edit... Oh and for future reference - I'd trust my own gut over my friend's guts anyway. Unless you happen to be good buddies with Kiwiness or BradP you probably have more of an idea of how to win a ribbon on dpc than your uninitiated friends :).

To answer to your question, Tony, I would not have scored either of those images more than 5, so whether you listened to your friends or listened to your heart it might not have made a difference.
Here are the reasons: both shots are technically good. They are in sharp focus, and the composition of what you have there is good. I didn't care for the selective saturation in either, because the element highlighted by color isn't necessarily what I would have chosen for a focal point. Both of these shots have an eye-level view to them, sometimes taking the shot from an unusual perspective makes a more dramatic impact.
The first shot you posted, of the big building, has distracting power lines and the antennae on the top doesn't add much. What might have made that shot more dramatic was if you had gotten closer to the building and shot a little more skyward, making better use of the natural lines of the building. The second shot you posted, the one that had "Squat" on the door, suffers from a lack of visual interest. What might have made that shot stronger was if you had stepped to the right a little bit, dropped either up or down and framed the entire word through one of the diamond patterns.
Overall, both of the images are decent, they are just not very dramatic. You were on the right track. Hope this helps. |

Hi, Tony. I would have given the second image a 7 and the first one a 5, along with a suggestion to move closer to the subject in order to get rid of those power lines, which don't add anything to the shot. It's really hard sometimes to tell what will do well and what will not. The best possible guage is whether or not you are happy with the shot and therefore don't give a damn what people like me are going to say about your power lines. :-)
