Out of these three

I chose the left one for the challenge, because I though it is most "portrait-like" out of three. Do you think it was the right choice given that it ended up at 142nd place? And what is wrong with this photo?

I like the middle one the best because it is crisp and clear and captures more of the personality of the cat. The photo you submitted is too softly focused and probably suffered in the voting because of it.

I think the left one is a bit soft as well but i think it might be a bit of the background that is distracting.
If you were to go to a portrait studio you notice that they have solid backgrounds.
They don't take away from the main subject at all.
Thats where i went with my "Stanley" photo.
I had a white backdrop just as you would see in a portrait studio, although mine was just a white sheet placed aprox 3 feet behind stanley.

I think the second one would have scored better in the challenge. Based on the negative comments received on my entry, a solid background would have helped the second shot. (I used a professional backdrop that's popular in our area. Silly me!)
The third shot is my favorite. I love the reflections and the cat's pose.
