Human Scavenger Hunt: A Challenge

The object of this ‘game’ is to help you become more comfortable photographing people. Photographers, in general, seem to be afraid to ask permission to photograph people. This little exercise should help us overcome that fear.

Objective:

Locate and photograph the people on this list. When you find the person, you should ask them for permission to take a photo. The photo should be a simple snapshot and the subject should be looking at you when you shoot. You should also get the subject̢۪s name to go along with the photo. The subjects of these photos should be people that you don̢۪t already know. The subjects should also be over 18 years old.

Prize:

The first person to collect all of these photographs will win a ‘virtual ribbon’ and bragging rights.

The List:

1. A uniformed police officer **complete**
2. A grocery store clerk (in working environment) **complete**
3. A fast food restaurant employee (in working environment)
4. A uniformed referee at a sporting event **complete**
5. A bartender (in working environment) **complete**
6. A waiter/waitress in a restaurant
7. A musician with musical instrument in hand
8. A person eating ice cream
9. An adult on a bicycle
10. A photographer pointing his/her camera at you **complete**
11. A person sitting on a public bench
12. A uniformed delivery person (UPS/FEDEX/Pizza Delivery/Mail/etc) **complete**
13. A person with their pet
14. A person selling tickets at a movie or event ticket window
15. Someone cooking food **complete**

Give it a tryâ€Â¦ you will have a good timeâ€Â¦

I'm not allowed to go in a bar

I like this alot. It's sort of funny but I know alot of photographers that are really sort of shy. While they may love to watch and think alot about what they see, many times they are rarely aggressive to get into the thick of things and get the shot. That 'aggressiveness' is really integral to being a successful event photographer imho. Anyway, since I think there's a glut in market for ribbons, how 'bout a ribbon for each and everyone that accomplishes the 'mission' and then maybe a virtual award for the best group of shots, a GGA (Gutsy Glamour Award), if you will.

there are bars in most large family restaurants, If you explain why you're there they usually wont kick you out.

Try a Salad Bar just when the attendant shows up with a big bowl of lettuce. I dare anyone to say that doesn't qualify. (heh, heh)

Well I had the opportunity to take a picture of number 1 - a uniformed police officer tonight but chickened out. Just accomplishing one on the list would be a huge accomplishment for me but doesnt look like it's going to happen :(

You may interpret the descriptions of the photos any way you see fit as long as the 'rules' are met as described in the original post.

well, i'll have to say that this 'challenge' has been one of the coolest things i've done since, well, i guess since the dc g2g ;-) maybe i should say, this is one of the coolest challenges i've ever taken up.

anyways, i decided to see if i could do it today. i came close, getting 13 out of 15. hard to find a referee working in the middle of the day, and it was too cold to find anyone eating ice cream. all the same, this was an excellent adventure, on a number of levels.

for one, i wanted to get a feel for the mechanics of approaching i people don't know to take their picture while also getting a model release. another thing i wanted to find out was just how much of this could i do in a day. i ended up with about 90 shots, editted almost 30, and have uploaded about 15, so far. not bad for a days work.

i took a very straight forward approach. if i went into a place of business, i tracked down a manager to let them know what i wanted to do, and to make sure they were ok. i told them that i was participating in an on-line photo safari, and that i had to take pictures of 15 different people. i had printed out the list, using a very large font, and i showed it to them. i also did this with the subjects i wanted to shoot. when i had their permission, i explained that i would need to take at least two pictures, one with them holding up the model release, and one of them doing whatever. i also had printed up and cut out some business card sized slips of paper with my dpc url and instructions for finding the images, as well as my regular web address. once they signed the model release, i gave them the slip of paper, telling them how to see their pictures. everybody seemed to like this idea.

and, to make it even better, when i was in a restaurant, some patrons asked if they could pay me to take their picture. so i took it, and will be taking them prints tomorrow.

at this point, i'll say, "Thanks, John, for giving me a vehicle/reason to go out and do something different today!"

now, on to the pictures...
