Can anyone help me find a tutorial on how to make text from a pic.
The sort you see on postcards where a pic has been used to make letters in a very large font. I am using PS-CS or 7.
Many thanks for any help

Do you want the text to be all from one pic, or like a mosaic of pics? If one pic, you can use the following method:
- Load the pic that you want to appear on the text
- If the layer that the pic is on is the background layer, double-click on the layer name and rename it. That converts it to a non-background layer
- Select the Text tool
- Select the font & size you want - Use a heavy (bold) font for best result
- Type the text you want, arranging it on the pic where you desire. Don't worry that the text covers the pic
- Select the text; you'll see the "marching ants" tightly wrapped to the text outline
- Make the layer with the pic the active layer
- Invert the selection: Selection>Invert
- Delete the selection
- Delete the layer with the text
You now have the remains of the original pic on a non-background layer with the parts outside the text outline deleted. All other parts of the layer are transparent. You can overlay this onto any background you wish. Remember that if you're going to drop this into a document in another application, you'll need to save in a a file format that preserves the transparency. I'd suggest PNG.

I just browsed through Scott Kelby's book today at the bookstore and WOW - I need me this book. A bit pricey at $40, but damn it's got some great stuff in it!

Oh, sorry my bad - Skiprow went to the Down and Dirty seminar - I was reading Down and Dirty Tricks for Photoshop CS - it's definitely my next book.

Thanks mavrik - that'd be this one on Amazon: //www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735713537/qid=1113166227/sr=8-3/ref=pd_csp_3/102-5527912-2554551?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
They have used ones as well. I think I'll pick one up.
ps: If skiprow told you he went to a "Down & Dirty" seminar, I wouldn't be sure it has anything to do with Photoshop. LOL |
