My one year anniversary on DPC is approaching and I was prompted to pause and reflect over the last year (took about 1.5 seconds):

When I started here, I was the happy owner of a Nikon Coolpix 4500 and thought I'd never need another digital camera. After a few months kicking around here, talkin' to you folks, I caught DSLR fever and in September, upgraded to a Canon 10D.

(Of course, now I know I'm happy and will certainly never need a new camera. Lenses, of course, are another matter...)

So, who's dropped big bucks on new equipment since joining this site? How many of you can directly tie your habit and obsession to the addiction-happy culture we've fostered here.

Step up folks, "My name is (state name), and I bought a (state camera) mostly because of my membership in DPC..."

I actually DPC'd because I upgraded :) I got this snazzy new DSLR and said "s*#t, I have a lot to learn!" Of course now I'm drooling over what new lenses I need. Thanks a lot DPC!!!

Both. I found DPC because I upgraded (a Google search for problem with the Digital Rebel), then upgraded because I found DPC (lenses, backpack, filters...). Membership costs a lot more than #*&@ $25!

Now everyone has convinced me to buy a DSLR. Which I plan on buying sometime around October.

Thanks guys. I'm spending my life savings. :)

I'd always shot SLR with film, but first bought a digital P&S (Nikon 995) that I had a great but frustrating time with. I missed the flexibility and responsiveness of a SLR, and the image quality of the 3.2Mpx Nikon was OK but not spectacular.
I knew I would upgrade to a DSLR, and DPC definitely gave me the "kick" to do so earlier than I would have otherwise. Since upgrading, I've put more cash into building a system than I ever have put into camera equipment before, LOL. But I can honestly say that I really use the equiment to its capability (I don't invest in a lens or ccessory unless I know I have a real use for it).
Many thanks to DPC for making me a much better photographer, and helping to reignite my love of the art. And many thanks to the DPC community, which feels like "home" on the 'net.

Nah, I found DPC while I was looking for a new camera.

I should have titled the thread "The True Cost of Membership." Maybe the admins should add a disclaimer??

I found DPC while looking for what's out there when I was thinking about getting back into photography. I think I got the camera a few days after I registered here. This is actually the first camera I paid for. I have a Nikon FE-10 that a friend of mine gave me as a present. I have always used other people's cameras before - different makes and models. It's nice to have friends with all sorts of photography equipment.

If not a disclaimer, a guide for discussing the NEED for equipment with our spouse and why it is a good investment.

I was directed here by the evil Miss M (Barb!) and immediately addicted. I had won my very first digital camera, upgraded to the next before joining but since joining have been looking and thinking and slowly moving up the line towards a DSLR. But that is a few years down the road, I want to be completely ready for it when the times comes to go that route and be able to use the camera to it's fullest capabilities. I just finally got a camera I can add an extra flash too, now to find the flash for my Olympus c-5000 that doesn't cost me more than the camera did! ;)

Before I joined DPC I didn't even know what an aperture was and wondered if ISO was a song by Jay-Z. I was perfectly fine with my IXUS400. Then I started messing around with my fathers G2 and now I'm going for a RebelXT in summer. Hm...no money for membership left :)

I don't recall how i found DPC, but after upgrading froma 1mp p&s to a Fuji S602 I found this place and eventually moved up to a 300D. (can't blame DPC for that, it was what i wanted when i got the Fuji).

I started on the site with a Canon A40 and had intentions of buying a DSLR anyhow as the lack of control frustrated me, but DPC was integral in helping me make my initial purchasing decision of the drebel.

Subsequent lens purchases have been informed by DPC and fredmiranda.com...

When I get my 350D, it'll be entirely because of DPC! Not complaining though, I love this site

I originally had a small hp photosmart 612 that my mom had given me when she upgraded herself, Then I found this site and started participating in the challenges and soon found myself upgrading to my Nikon Coolpix 5700, which is fine for me for now but would someday like to upgrade to a DSLR as well.

There's no way my photography would have improved as much as it has without DPC, and without that I wouldn't have upgraded twice in the last year!

Well, it looks like this site inspired everyone to buy new cameras and lenses. I already had my Canon 300D for about 9 months when I joined. I wasn't using it to it's potential, and wanted something to give me the kick in the ass that I needed to make it a real addiction.

My obsession lately has been studio lighting. I never heard the words "Alien Bees" before, and now I think my girlfriend almost wishes I hadn't. This site has pushed me to try different types of photography that I haven't considered before. I thank you DPC, but my wallet doesn't.

I found this place after I upgraded. I was never very good with film, then I got into digital. I missed the interchangeability of lenses. I saved for 4 1/2 years to get my first DSLR, and I think it was worth the wait. Now I want to learn how to use it.

DPC is the reason why I am addicted to photography and they did help with me wanting my DSLR, but I decided to buy the camera to better myself for me. :-)) This place rocks!

I actually upgraded to a DSLR since I used to shoot lots of film with an SLR before and missed it tremedously. I also wanted a camera that would not give me any shutter lag. I will be keeping my 300D for a while now. Focussing on buying good lenses for the time being. Will upgrade body once 20D or 350XT goes down in price.

My one-year anniversary as a paid member is next week...and I can't even BEGIN to tell you how much this site has changed several aspects of my life. A year ago, I had a fairly new Sony DSC-P32 camera...and was absolutely thrilled to have it. I lived in a world that had never heard the acronyms such as dSLR, ISO, PS... and I didn't know an fstop from a hole in the ground. After I started participating in challenges and reading the forums, I began to see that what I had was extremely limiting...so I got the upgrade fever. By the end of May, I had a new Kodak DX-6490. Content in the world of a better P&S, I rocked along...until Santa paid me a visit with a 300D. Well, of course, I was absolutely thrilled and thought, "Wow...it can't get any better than this!" Then those Canon wizards announced the arrival of the XT...so naturally I thought "OMG it does get better than this!!!" So that's when I took the 300D back to anticipate the arrival of the XT. Well, that drama of course is still continuing, so in the meantime, I've bought a 10D. And you know what? I think I'll stick with it instead. I know that it can get better than that, but I'm not sure I really need "more power." ;) I'm quite content, except that my lens collection is lacking and I sure do need a couple more to make me REALLY happy. LOL

So, four cameras, three lenses, three filters, 2 memory sticks, 2 SD cards, 3 CF cards, 2 hand-me-down camera bags, a new lowepro microtrekker, a sensor swipe, pec pads, lens cloth, lens pen, 3 extra batteries, a zoo membership, a few DPC GTG outings, and a partridge in a pear tree later, yeah...I guess you could say this site caused me to upgrade. And I wouldn't have it any other way!!!!

Upgraded my camera due mainly to this website. I felt I was missing out on something. I never really got into photography before digital because I cut off important body parts - mainly heads. I got mad at myself and discouraged and didn't want to waste money on film processing only to find out I developed a bunch of crap. With digital, I have been amazed at what I can do and what I can scrap if it looks horrible. Money well-spent on the website and the new camera!
