Originally posted by kawesttex: That,s the problem, matting for that size, so no matting and backing board is my option. The frame is already made out of oak and I have the plexiglass cut. The print has signs of rippling and I have no idea how to go about smoothing the print.
The frame cost me $65, plexiglass $45, and the print was $65. I didn't think that was to bad.
edited for the prices |
I don't know if this would work, but have you considered using 'hardboard'? I use it for backing (dust cover) on frames I build in my woodshop. You can buy it pretty thin (1/8") in 4x8 sheets at building supply stores (Lowes, Home Depot).

It would work but it would probably be harder to create a good seal with it. |

I saw a print today that had turned very yellow inside a frame that was properly assembled. When I opened up the frame, I found two culprits of the yellowing, which basically ruined a very valuable signed/numbered series print from a local artist...
The print had been mounted to the mat board all the way around with regular masking tape. The backing for the print was regular corrugated cardboard. Both of these items emit gasses that deteriorate prints. It was unfortunate to see this because the print was behind UV protective glass and the dust cover was properly applied to the back of the frame.
When I removed the print from the matting, the print that had been covered by the matting was almost perfectly white and clean. The surface area of the print that had air around it was very yellow. This print had lived for about 7 years in a clean environment out of direct sunlight and flourescent lighting.
The components you use in your assembly are critical. |
