Hi all

I need to shoot somehting that would represent METAL in the chinese lements (the others are wood, fire, earth, water). The other shots were easy but I just can't find anything that woudl represent metal.

To put you in context, it'll be a texture used mostly as a bg or watermark in a massage therapy book.

THX!!!

Something rusty.
A bunch of coins
A bunch of nuts & bolts
Gold bars (Take them out from under your bed & polish them up)
A sink (Stainless steel)
A forgery

I was thinking of a forgery or gold bars as well...the coins are a great idea, though. Especially if you have some ancient Roman coins sitting around...

hmmmm

That is a tricky one. Somehow metal isn't something I would associate with massage therapy.

I believe the Chinese view of metal isn't quite the view of metal we have, however. If my memory serves, it is the element for the season of Autumn and focuses on the idea of the core, simplest and essential form such as when leaves fall from the trees, thus exposing them, and the grass on the ground dies, exposing the rock. Metal is anything that represents the structure of the earth, such as stone or crystals. A shining jewel would certainly be the most beautiful representation. Also, the chinese character for the word metal has something to do with gold. The element is associated with our higher self and the ability to get over grief and loss.

Hope this information helps you in some way. I think I'd try to do something with gold, but I'm not sure what exactly.

I'd say use some kind of spherical metal object and play with distorting reflections. I'd also say steer clear of rust, cuz that doesn't seem as friendly and touchable as clean cold steel.

Ooh, what about quicksilver? Or a samuri sword! Or...or...or...like...um...nope, nothin' else.

An embossed metal grid, like you'd find on a truck or stair tread makes a good background that's easily recognizable as metal.

My first thought was similar to this - a pair of big shiny ballbearings, which then led me to think of those "stress balls" that you twirl around the palm of your hand to chill you out.
