Well one flaw and one photographer stupidity.
Flaw #1: The camera is a bit smaller that its predecessor the 300D. The timer button is positioned right under your thumb when holding the grip causing me to pushed the timer button by mistake 4 times in the last 2 days causing losted picture.

Flaw #2: ME! I took a drive out to a local lake to take picture of some ducks. I bet I took 50 pictures of ducks fighting over female ducks, birds in flight, close-ups, etc. I was very excited about what they may come out like because I was using my new 70-200 f/4.0L lens. When I got home took off the lens, caped it and caped the body and then went to remove the CF card. Guess what IT WAS NOT IN THERE! I took over 50 pictures with no card....I thought I had the camera set so that it would not take a picture without a card. urrrrrrrrr

crap.

you know that you can set the camera not to take pics if you don't have a cf card in there, right? I set mine up that way for just that reason. I have also had the same problem with the timer button. it actually cost me my "extreme action" shot, but I guess that just means I will have to keep trying.

Yea I thought I had it set but I guess I didn't. I bet I will from now on. I have a CF reader build in to my computer so when I download pictures I do it through the reader not via USB. I forgot and left it in the reader.

I did this with my 10D. Took all kinds of pics of a (pet) baby raccoon. The cutest thing ever. Went to upload...and nada. Sucks big time. I quickly changed the setting so my camera won't fire without a card inside.

it doesn't warn you on the LCD? instead of the image preview?

I've done it once as well. Those were my best shots ever! Pulitzer contenders no doubt! hehehe - it's like the fishing stories and "the one that got away" ;-)

Sorry to laugh and sorry for your experience. I am also disappointed to hear about the timer button issue - that makes me think twise about an upgrade.

To be honest I didn't look at the LCD. Everything was happening so quick. There were mallard ducks fighting, chasing, and what appeared to be mating in the water. I was clicking away. Then some birds flew over head and I was clicking away as they were soaring and being held up by the 15 to 20 mph winds. Nice stormy clouds behind them. The more I think about, I get more upset. I could say that one of those photographs could of been my entry into the "Free Study VIII" challenge.

I just read DPReview on the 350XT. The 7th con about the camera referees to my problem about accidentally pushing the drive/timer button. Here is an copy from DPReview on the Pro's and Cons':

Conclusion - Pros
Excellent resolution, a clear match for the EOS 20D
Good color, default +1 parameter set means punchy images out of the camera
Noise free 'silky smooth' images at ISO 100, 200 and 400
Very good in-camera image processing, JPEG's almost as good as processed RAW's
Very low noise levels even at ISO 1600, virtually unnoticeable below this
Excellent seven point AF system, fast, good in low light and reliable
Good continuous shooting speed, large buffer size, smart buffering implemented
Very fast startup (virtually instant)
Very small and light weight although hand grip is a little thin
Good construction, feels well put together
Improvements over user control; metering mode, AF mode, Flash exposure compensation
In-camera programmable 'parameter sets' to control image processing algorithms
Selectable color space (sRGB / Adobe RGB)
Almost no noise in long exposures, optional noise reduction if required
RAW mode provides the 'digital negative'
Customizable exposure steps (1/3, or 1/2 EV)
Customizable SET button (Quality, Parameter or Playback)
Remote capture software included for computer controlled shooting
Designed to combine ease of use and advanced features, works well in this respect
Playback magnification up to 10x (perfect for checking focus)
Unique JUMP mode in playback (by date, 10 or 100 images)
Orientation sensor for automatic image rotation
Full Canon EF lens compatible (plus EF-S lenses)
Excellent Compact Flash Write performance (4.5 - 5.5 MB/sec with fast card)
Excellent battery life despite new smaller lower capacity battery
Excellent supplied software suite
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed
Value for money

Conclusion - Cons
Opening the CF compartment door shuts camera down, loses any buffered images
LCD monitor is dim unless you turn up brightness setting
New kit lens disappointing at telephoto with smaller apertures
Average automatic white balance performance, still very poor under incandescent light
Controls for ISO, metering, AF mode and White Balance now require extra SET press
Can be awkward to change ISO, metering, AF mode and WB settings in bright daylight
Drive mode button too easy to press accidentally
No spot metering
ISO sensitivity not displayed on viewfinder status bar or LCD panel while being changed
Flash must be raised for AF assist
Flash sync 1/200 sec (compared to 1/500 sec for the Nikon D70)
Plastic finish will not be everyone's taste
No Kelvin white balance selection in-camera
Small viewfinder view, although brighter than EOS 300D

I was playing with one for the first time at a local shop today. I like the feature set but for me, it is too small. I need something I can get a good grip on and the XT just doesn't cut it without a battery pack or something to hang on to. If I consider any other camera at this point it will be the 20D

Why would a camera have the capability of taking a picture without a card in it?
Maybe I'm missing somethin'...

So you can play make-believe photographer.

Edit: Actually, it's a weight-saving measure.

That sucks about the CF card. I know on the 300d, it warns you unless you have the hacked firmware -- then it becomes an option if you want warned or not.

I bet there's an option in the menu, you might want to look into it and turn it on.

Iwas serously looking for an XT.....you guys are scaring me. I don't own any Canon lenses or accessories at this point.....can you run the XT on batteries or do you need the battery pack? A&M has a super price on body and lenses. $495 I believe. Was thinking i might start there and pick up the lenses and accessories I want instead of what the kits want to give me. I can shoot with batteries for awhile to get a quaity f2.8 lens instead of a mediocre f4 that I will be unhappy with in a month.

Could it be that when tethered to the computer it doesn't need a card? I haven't actually tried it, and don't have my manual handy.

Have you ordered from A&M before? You might want to look at this first:

If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

They can be jacked directly into a PC in a studio setting.

Too bad about the ducks, Scott! Even though it must have been frustrating, it is funny - after the fact. Hope you can get some more tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pictures with your L lens.

I do that even with the card in. ;-)

So far I haven't shot without the card, but I have gone out without the battery. That's easier to notice, and fortunately I figured that out before taking any shots.

Anyway, sorry to hear about the lost shots. :-(

The reason the camera works without the CF is so children like us can play with them in shops & pretend we are taking real pictures. I know I did ;-)
I don't have that problem with the missing card as I never take my card out.
I haven't lost any shots with the timer button yet, but have also made that experience a couple of times, but for scenery shots, so could just change the setting.
The main gripe I have (though this is on most cameras) is that the ISO value is not displayed on the LCD or in the viewfinder. I took a days photos at 1600 on a sunny day in snow! Luckily the noise is so minimal that all photos are useable.

I haven't personally bought from shops on the internet for camera gear, but I have heard pretty good things about B&H photo.

//www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=1&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=SearchBar&A=search&Q=*&shs=Rebel+XT

The prices are quite a bit higher than what you were seeing at the other web site, but I think this is a more reputable dealer.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Dell Home offers the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with the kit lens, in silver or black, for $999. Apply coupon code "6FLLKQ5?GRKH17" and the price falls to $849.15. Shipping starts at $7. Offer ends tomorrow at 7 am ET.

You won't beat that from a reputable dealer.

Or you can buy it there without a lens for $764 (black or silver)
Dell
(apply the same coupon)

Not bad at all, but too late for me
