DonĂ¢€™t get me wrong my Panasonic FZ20 was a joy and took great pictures but I did not realize how much the noise level differs between a prosumer camera like the FZ20 and a dSLR like the 350D. Below are the two original shots no adjustments except resizing. You will also see a 640x crop taken from the full size image. The noise level of the 350D is so much lower.
Panasonic FZ20 @ ISO-400
A 640X Crop from the original image
Canon 350D @ ISO-400

Pretty cool, that's what a BIG sensor will do for you.

That's REALLY a lot of noise from the Panasonic... My 5700 doesn't have anywhere NEAR as much noise at ISO 100, though it is not as nice as the rebel of course...

Your right! I have read that the panasonic had a higher Noise level than most procumer cameras and I guess they were right.

It looks like your new Rebel XT takes a really nice picture, Scott. The colors look really vibrant and the focus looks really clear and sharp. I just held one in Wal-Mart tonight, it has a nice feel to it - solid and well built. |

Here's a square at 100% from the 5700:
as compared to your panasonic:

addendum; This, incidentally, was shot at JPG Fine; it's a hair better in TIFF...

I would say the 5700 has a better noise level than the panasonic FZ20 judging by your post. BTW the 350D example I posted is in JPEG not RAW. The reason is CS or at least my PS-CS will not support the 350D's .CR2 Raw files even after I have upgraded the RAW Conversion from Adobe site - Version 2.4

It does have a nice feel. Almost feels like my old 35mm canon. Very comfortable. It's not to light and at the same time not to heavy. And BTW all pictures I have taken so far is with the kit lens. Should get my other lens from B&H Monday or Tuesday.

I started with a Fuji FinePix 4900Z when it was brand new to the market. I moved up to the Nikon 5700 a couple years later for 3 reasons; better (longer) zoom with less distortion, Better build quality (metal, not plastic), and it had the lowest noise level I could find at the time.

You are getting the 70-200mm F4 L aren't you? That will be a great lens. Someone posted some pictures taken at the Denver Zoo with that lens in the forums tonight and they are fabulous. I can't wait to see some of the pictures you take with that lens! |

SDW65, so you are positive that that Panasonic image is 80 ISO? Is there any way that the camera was in auto mode and selected a higher ISO for the conditions? It seemed like a great camera for a friend's shooting needs and now I am thinking of disuading him from getting it. I never thought the noise levels were as low as the Rebels but none of the test images I have seen showed noise that bad. You are probably right, I am just hoping you were mistaken :)

I stand corrected. I just viewed the EXIF data and it was set to auto and that is at ISO-400. Sorry for the mis-information. Still the 350D noise is a lot less.
For everyone that has read and post in this tread I offer my apologies. I will go back and edit my post.

Jusat for the heck of it, shoot us one at ISO 100 and post it before you sell the cam? I'd actually been thinking of getting a Lumix, just for the Zeiss glass...

Sorry but I had to go through my pictures. I have my FZ20 already boxed up for shipment in case it sales. It's very close to reserve now, so I believe it will.

I have a couple examples from the King of noise, the F828. I've always found the camera to not have as much noise as my 717, especially in Sky's. But it, the 828 sure got a bad rap thats for sure.

sdw: Glad to hear that you're pleased with the feel and performance of your new Rebel 350D. Like I said in the PM, I'm really looking forward to seeing your work in the next months. And I'm really jealous of the lenses you have coming! --Ray
