I'm a newbie here, and am still touring through the DPC photo archives and member portfolios. So many awesome photos!

One thing still strikes me as a little odd, though. There seems to be an inordinately high number of duck photos. Is there a logical reason for this?

A few possibilities off the top of my head:

1) The best photographers here have each taken a few duck photos, so their high scores sort them to the top all the time while browsing.
2) There have been a lot of duck challenges.
3) Ducks are beautiful, artistically inspiring creatures.
4) There is some sort of subliminal message associated with ducks.
5) It's an inside thing that started long ago.
6) Everybody loves ducks.
7) Ducks love to be photographed.
8) Ducks simply rock.

Thanks for any help clearing this up for me.

:)

The simple explanation is that everything here is "just ducky." :-)

P.S. I hope I don't ruffle any feathers...

fwiw, duck was my highest scoring photo. I'll shoot only ducks from now on.
Can a duck be a pet? Or how about a letter-shaped duck?

edit: changed sucks into ducks:-)

Hee! I just added mine last week after learning all members are required a minimum of two duck photos. ;)

Seriously, I've noticed a lot of bird photos in general, though ducks in particular never stuck out at me. I bet I'll see them everywhere now!

Serious answer (pay attention, I don't do these very often) ...

There's a nature reserve a mile or so up the road. It is "my little corner of the world" so to speak. I go there at night, after the people have gone home, and sit there with my dog and camera, watching the sun disappear behind the trees and leaving a fiery red glow on the water.

Species wise it's not much of a nature reserve ... mainly Mallards, Canada Geese and Swans, but it's the most relaxing place on earth for me : )

Because of this I *always* have plenty of fresh duck shots, so if I can shoehorn one into a challenge, I will!

Edit: Still building this gallery, but ... more here.

I think the politically correct term is "challenged"?

Heh, nobody told the ducks in Chorley (see the Duck a la Skiprow link).

One more for luck : )

Excellent. Great composition and I like the colour treatment.

Ducks are easily photographed, even by beginners. They will allow you to get pretty close to them, especially the domescicated ones. They are abundant in most parts of the world. Some species are very colorful. They often look good in photos because of their reflections. Flight, landing and taking off can be good action shot opportunities. People who live in large cities enjoy going to parks and preserves for the escape. Ducks know that cats don't swim, that men can't swim as good as they can, and that dogs can swim pretty good. And ducks have an inbreed instinct that lets them know a camera from a shotgun.

Harvey,

I'm soo glad you mentioned that phrase. I've seen a similar phrase in the current challenge. Having no cat/dog/fish myself, local ducks are the best I can do. What are the chances of DNMC (did not meet challenge) comments?

ps. alternatively I could take a photo of an occasional roach, but they're bad models. Unless I squish them, they are awfully hard to focus on.

Or, perhaps, we've become so urbanized and alienated from fauna and flora that seeing a duck makes our hearts race... ;-)

Hey Bod, Half your ducks are coots/gallinules, but they do have semi-webbed feet and float. :)

Heh, I know, they're about the only bird species I can recognise ... but if it's small and floats it counts as far as I'm concerned : )

You good people will let me know if you think I'm obsessed or have a problem won't you?
Duck Porn
Grebe Porn really, but like I said ... ; )

Some people keep ducks as pets, so yes, a duck could meet the challenge in Pet Portraits. But the setting will make or break it; if people think it looks too much like a wild one it will suffer.

Myself, I'm trying how to make a picture of my Ant Farm look like a true protrait.

Well that explains my low scores I've only got one duck in my portfolio.
