I really like this - I like the rough feel of the photo, great contrast. Only thing that bugs me about it is that the pillars seems to be slightly off the vertical.

LOL I just noticed it too. Fixing it now.

You're aligning the rightmost pillar vertically and allt he others are off. If you square up the centermost vertical, that will be the best you can do, unless you use PS skew or perspective feature, which I'd recommend you do.

Just took the distraction away... I think. I replaced the original thumb.

Not to try and sound negative, but what is it that sets this image apart from others to make a good free study image?

In a free study there are really only two things you want to address and you do not even have to address both.

The first is a message or statement. A good free study image might convey a message that gives it special meaning to the average viewer. This one does not convey a strong message to me.

The second is technical or photographic excellence which always makes a great entry. A great technical entry in a free study should always do well. (Though I am sure there will be a few that still don't think it "meets the challenge". LOL :) ).

What is it about your photograph that makes it technically or photographically excellent above and beyond other photographs? It is composed decently and has good lines, but is a tad on the digital, oversharpened side. For me it does not use shallow DOF, or the rule of thirds, or a unique perspective, or special lighting, or other tecnical things that might set it apart from other photographs. It needs something like that to do well in a free study, IMHO.

I feel a free study image needs to either have a powerful message meaningful to the majority of voters or it is technically superior to most other images to do well.

By all means, I don't know it all. If you feel yours meets one or both suggested criteria then submit something like it. If not, then come up with a new idea.

But whatever you do...

Have fun!

This is a nice urban landscape photo... The range of tones seems a little flat and maybe you could use a bit more contrast to help bring out the tones out a bit more.

That's interesting it looks very contrasty on my calibrated monitor.

You've got a decent shot here and you've made a good artistic choice with the black and white. I understand why you sharpened so heavily, but I'm not sure it works as well as you intended. Shot has strong vertical lines, but the slight diagonal line of the overpass competes with the vertical and detracts from the overall visual interest. This is just me, but (in general) when I see a photograph that uses strong foreground framing elements I look for a solid focal point and IMO there was not one here. To my eye, this shot has a documentary feel to it rather than an artistic or emotional tone. It's clear you worked hard on your post-processing - thanks for showing it to us!
