Not bad at all. The EF-S 18-55mm lens is not the best but a good beginner wide zoom, the 75-300 is ok and has IS. You'll be happy. The best lens in here is the 50mm f/1.8...best value for your money.

You can save $140-$200 buying these from Dell today. Price on 20D with lens is 10% off $1599 with free shipping, so almost $200 less than B&H.
Other items might also be available at 10% off.
Sale ends today (though they have them often).
Look at XPBargains.com for other prices. |

Just got off the phone with dell and with the 10% it would be $2450+. So B&H seems to be the best right now. |

How can that be for just the items below? At least you can buy the camera for $1440 with lens and free shipping. Someone you are talking to at Dell seems a bit out of it. But I always order via the web.
Is there something you are ordering besides what's below? Or maybe the Dell salesman can't add?
I looked at their website, and my guess is they're adding in a
CANON EF 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens
instead of the 75-300, which they don't list on their website. The DO IS lens cost about $600 more!
The solution is to buy the 75-300 separately.

Personnally, i'd get a 70-200 2.8 instead. Its more expensive, but you'll get way better quality.
I'm getting the 2.8 IS personally, and plan on getting the x2 adaptor, which will give me 400+ for the same Fstop as the 70-300, but better range.

The 2x TC degrades the quality quite a bit when used with zooms. TC's work best on Primes.

did you check www.focuscamera.com?
I recently bought my Nikon from them after comparing the prices to B&H and finding them a bit cheaper and they don't charge for shipping. They sem to have a decent reputation, and my transaction went very smoothly. |

| The 20D with kits lens is $1356 shipped at ibuydigital.com. The Lexar 2Gb 80x card is $199 at Amazon. You might save a little between the two. Unless you need that extra reach, I'd skip the 75-300 and put a few more bucks toward the Canon 70-200 f/4L. |

Another alternative, and one that I would probably go for instead, is to get the Canon 70-200 f4L for just a little more money than you are already spending on the 75-300. That is, if you can stand to lose 100mm in reach. Of course it all depends on how you'll be using it. Decisions, decisions.... part of the fun of it all! Good luck with whatever combination you end up with, it'll be fine. You're gonna love that 20D, I'm sure. |

70-200 f/4 L sounds like a better idea, I just got the 1.4 converter for mine so its now a 280 5.6 and now loss of quality. Oh, and I'd consider 2x1gb cards rather than 1x2gb just in case anything happens you'll still have 1 card (probably left at home in the cardreader though ;)

On the lens part. What would be the best in your opinion. using 2 lens to cover the range of 28-300mm. Keeping within the price range I have stated including camera? Or would a 28-300 single lens be best? I know I want to stay with the canon 50mm f/1.8.
Thanks for any suggestions? I plan on ordering this evening. |

| Narrower zoom ranges = better quality usually, but good quality lenses aren't cheap. Personally, the Tamron 28-75 and Canon 70-200 cover nearly all of my needs, but those lenses are nearly $1000 together. The same Canon 1.4x TC and circular polarizer work on both lenses for a little added flexibility. |

I´d skip the kit lens, when you start using the 50mm f1.8 you´ll see how bad the kit lens really is and won´t use it much.
as a starters pack, take the 20D body only, the 50mm f1.8, and the 70-200L f4, you won´t have anything wider then 50mm, but when starting its better to have only one lens and really learn to take pictures with it, then when you´re good with the 70-200L f4 you´ve saved enough for the 17-40L f4 :)
it does matter what camera you are using, the 300D works fine with the 75-300 but you would never put that lens on the 1DsII, same with the 20D and 1D, those cameras deserve good lenses, bad lenses = bad pictures, good lenses does unfortunetly not equal good pictures, but you have the possibility to take good pictures if the talent is present.
it´s better to buy one good lens and take good pictures with that, rather than buy 3 bad lenses and take a lot of bad pictures ;)
and for memorycards, get the sandisk extreeme III card, 1GB is usually enough.

Well sdw65, you've tied my hands pretty well with these parameters:0)! To get the coverage you specify at the price you specify, the package you've created is pretty much it, and like I said, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
But if it were me, I would ditch the kit lens and get the 20D with the 2 gig card (I see that B/H has them bundled) for $1540 as advertised. Add the 50mm f1.8 for $75, and then the 70-200 f4L for $580. If shipping stays the same ($38), then the total comes to $2,233. That's about $91 more than your package, but in my opinion would be the best possible combination in that price range. Just one guy's opinion.
I'll be looking forward to seeing a thread when the camera arrives... the next few days are going to pass v-e-r-y slowly!! Good luck. |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I know it's hard to suggest lens for someone else not knowing there use. But I think the combo that nova and scalvert recommended is the best. Then I will save up for a wide angle lens to fill the gap from 28-70.
If everything goes as planned I will place the order today. Wish me luck. I just have to find the 70-200 f.4L lens on the B&H site

It's THIS one.
Not to throw a monkey wrench into the mix, but would you consider the new Rebel 350D instead of the 20D? Does the 20D really offer you anything that the Rebel doesn't have? I have access to a 20D at work, but I want a 350D for home- the differences just aren't that great. Onecall.com has the Rebel 350D with kit lens for $970 shipped (supposedly this particular camera bundle is black, but I don't see a color reference on the page). B&H has it, too, but it's about $30 more plus shipping. Unless you need a specific 20D feature that the 350D doesn't have, this could save you a few hundred to put toward lenses.

I was going with the 350D but everywhere I have tried is out of stock in the black and I really don't want the silver version. I also have some nerve damage an I'm afraid I may drop it and the plastic housing scares me. I have had my Panasonic FZ20 since November and have not dropped it yet but you never know. |

| Ibuydigital.com and digitalmegastore.com both have the black 350D kit in stock for under $999 shipped, and both dealers have good reputations. I doubt that the 20D would fare much better than the 350D if you dropped it. Besides, for a lot less than the $300 difference, you could get insurance. |

If I go that route then I could by the camera with kit for $999.99 at wolfcamera localy and purchase the accident waranty that covers damage. Then order the lens for B&H. And would have some left over for a bag and protection filter. BTW what would be a good filter to protect the lens both kit and the 70-200 f/4.0 L.?
That way I would have the camera today to start learning. I know it will be a big curve. and have the other lens shipped standard from b&h. |

| The kit lens and 70-200 have different filter sizes (50mm and 67mm), so one filter won't cover both lenses. That's part of the reason I like the Tamron 28-75... it also has a 67mm thread size. I use Hoya filters, but everyone has his or her own favorites. |

I personally wouldn´t put any protective filters on the lenses, just never take the hood of the lens, it gives a much better protection then the filter and doesn´t affect image quality or the f-stop like UV filter do.
I have the 70-200L f2.8 IS, the 17-40L f4 and the 50mm f1.4 and I don´t put the UV filter on the lens unless I´m off to the beach to shoot, the hood does a bad job protecting against saltwater spray ;) |
