Well, I'm off to Mexico with my family tomorrow and I'm a little nervous about bringing my L glass. I'm thinking I should bring my 28-80 kit lens and leave it at that, but I've been spoiled by my 24-70. I also have a 16-24 which might be nice for landscapes. Then I've got the 85 1.2 (my favorite lens) for great shots of my kids.

I haven't acquired extra insurance on them yet (stupid I know). I got these lenses for doing professional work and I would hate for anything to happen to them, and those lenses are a bit heavy to lug around.

I'm sorry, as I'm reading this over I sound really, really spoiled. Its the photographer not the gear right? Just looking for your opinions about what to bring with, not my poor me attitude.

My goodness, bring that L-glass...

I'm going on vacation in a month and I'm seriously considering renting the 70-200 f/2.8L for a week (unless I've finally bought one by then)...bring the best glass you have and take good care of it.

Really. If your worried about getting your gear ripped off the crime rate in the US is worse in most cases then it is in Mexico. Ever been to Tampa?

The one question I'd have to ask myself, do I want to and can I (read: will the wife give me the understanding) to turn the trip into a phototrip or can I bring all the gear and control myself not to go nuts taking shots. If I need to just get away from it all but still take a few shots here and there...then I'd bring the kit lens.

Knowing me, I'd get on my knees right now begging the wife to let me go nuts during the trip; then make sure I spent extra special attention on her during the trip :)

Not concerned about getting ripped off... just worried about trying to juggle my 5 and 7 year old, all of their stuff and my 10 pound camera bag, keeping track of everyone and everything, all while trying to snap a shot or two. Yes, my husband will be there, but, being totally normal, he tends to tune out on vacations ;).

I brought all of my camera gear, including my L glass, on our recent trip to the Yucatan. I even brought a laptop to dump the CF cards onto. I carried it all in a Tenba backpack that I bought for the trip. But, the only lens I used was the 17-40.

I probably would have used other lenses, like the 35-350, if I were there alone or had more time. But, we were there to have fun so I didn't spend a lot of time shooting.

If you do take your expensive gear, just be sure to keep an eye on it at all times. And, don't forget to have fun too! :)

I just got back from Cuba last week. I brought with me my Digital rebel body with batrtery grip, Canon 18-55mm kit lens and my 70-200mm f4. That`s it. If I had a canon 1.4x extender I would have brought that too. The only thing I really missed was a super-wide (Sigma 12-24, or canon 10-22, which I don`t own). Don`t forget your circ. pol. filters.

Also brought my X-drive 20gig battery-powered portable hard drive and my 420EX flash with diffuser.

EDIT

Went to my insurance broker and got everything insured on a rider on my home policy. That way if any got got stolen or smashed I was covered.

One thing that I did notice was that I was constantly switching lenses from wide to telephoto and then back again. I think in case like this the Sigma 18 - 200 mm DC lens might have been something handy to have. I think it would make for a pretty good travel lens for people who have DSLRs and who don't want to haul around too much glass. Probably not L glass quality, but good enough for most of us amateurs.
