Ok - so I bought a new Toshiba Laptop in November. Satellite P35-S609.

Well, I'm glad I got the extended 2-yr warrentee, because...oy.

It's nothing that is preventing me from doing my work, but the burner doesn't always work - it stops working mid-burn and corrupts the disc.

The RAM isn't registering properly (the 2nd 512MB card I installed) and applications take a while to load.

Even when I have the laptop on a flat surface, the processor overheats and the computer shuts itself off.

To make matters worse, My rubber feet are disapearing. Well, not mine, but my computer's.

So I called CompUSA today to find out if they do on-site service for extended warrentee holders. Of course not. Have to bring it in - it'll be shipped overnight to Toshiba, and then I have to wait 2 FRIGGEN WEEKS to get it back!!!! They said they can provide me with a loner, but I'd have to pay up to $700.00 for it (it'll be refunded at the end of the 2 weeks).

I'm trying to decide if it's worth it...(to rent it) or just go without a computer for two weeks.

I wouldn't want a loaner mainly because someone can probably get your passwords, file, etc, when you return it.

Man, that sucks. Toshiba's are rated one of the most reliable laptops. Our Satellite has been kicking for 4 years now.

The burner problem may be because of the RAM. It also sounds like a fan is dead.

Good luck getting it fixed. I wouldn't get a loaner though.

Why on earth would you have to dole out $700.00 for a loaner. Perhaps you should bring to their attention that they have your machine and that maybe, just maybe you would like a $700.00 deposit on your machine, just to ensure it comes back.

Their approach is reprehensible... Perhaps you should ask for a full refund... see how they deal with that request.

Lord.... this didn't happen to me, and still it has me fuming...

*GRINS* Choose MAC.

Toshiba standards are usually very high, I have had and sold quite a few but as we strive to make things faster better more compact with everything included etc etc we have to expect the odd ERROR!!! especially with windows. As far as the loner goes, I would wait the 2 weeks anything can happen to the loner then you will loose your $700, not a nice cherry on the cake you already have I think.. wait it out is my opinion.

CompUSA isn't exactly on my happy list either right now... They won't be stocking the XT for another 3 to 4 weeks according to the Regional Manager I spoke with yesterday, because they need to sell down their Rebel stock before they bring in the XT (allegedly). Hope your computer experience goes more smoothly than this camera saga has been going! $700...yikes. Good luck!!! :o)

The burner problem was happening before I added the RAM, I believe, I don't remember...but the Fan isn't dead...they're running constantly. I can't get them to turn off unless I reboot, and I'm afraid they'll burn out all together.

I was seriously considering MAC, but I didn't want to have to *cough* download all new applications.

Plus, I didn't have $3,000+ lying around.

My sister works at an insurance adjusters office and they got their hands on a MAC IBook...may need the screen replaced, but they offered it to me once it's refurbished. Don't know the $$, but I may just have to get it for cross-platform optimization.

That's like the Reg Mgr admitting that his outfit goofed big time on managing their inventory. Shop somewhere else instead of waiting. A few months ago when I was shopping for my 20D Ritz.com was offering free shipping on purchases over $100 (or maybe $200) and no sales tax. Might be worth a look.

Dude, that sucks. Get an Acer.
Taiwanese company that got into the notebook business a couple years ago. Great specs, great performance, great reviews, great PRICE.
I have gone through 4 laptops in 3 years - Compaq, Toshiba, Dell, and finally Acer and this is the best one I've ever encountered. 8 months, lots of traveling with it, absolutely no problems.

Try this. I have had a couple of laptops that gave me trouble right from the start. I brought it back to the store and they could not find anything wrong even after five times. Well what I did was to reboot everything and not install some of the programming. It seems that every company puts things on the computer that is there programming, such as Gateway with Gateway go back, a program to restore the hard drive to a set point. Well by removing all that and just putting on what I wanted the computer worked fine. Had it six years now and not even a flicker. Same with my desk top computer. So reload windows XP or what ever operating system you have and start from scratch.

um, with a 2yr fix it or replace it warrantee, I'm not about to go out on spend more money on a computer when I just bought this one 4 months ago. But thanks. I don't mind getting a lemon as long as they replace it with a diamond. :)

I've had my Toshiba Satellite laptop for almost a year, with absolutely no problems.

I used to do tech support for Toshiba. A couple of thoughts:

If you just bought it, your warranty work should be with Toshiba, not CompUSA. Call them.

Toshiba notebooks were notoriously picky about the brand of RAM added. All kinds of problems can happen from using the wrong brand. If I remember correctly, they recommend Kingston. Again, call them.

Toshiba service was extremely good when I was working there (no, I'm not taking credit for it). They would FedEx a shipping box to your door, service the computer, and FedEx it back. Usually no more than a week door to door. Call Toshiba. CompUSA is the worst. Good luck.

I'm calling toshiba tomorrow, but as far as I know, my extended warrantee is only valid through CompUSA. CompUSA, doesn't service the computer though. They ship it to Toshiba overnight and then Toshiba sends it back to them. When I talk to Toshiba, I'll ask them if the warrantee I have through CompUSA is honored by them - 'cause I rather skip the middle man.

The extended warranty shouldn't come into play until the Toshiba warranty runs out. If you just bought it, I think you should still be dealing with Toshiba.

Ask them anyway, but I'm pretty sure they're going to tell you no re: dealing with them for the extended warranty, but if you want to spend the money, you may be able to buy their extended warranty.

I don´t understand how your laptops can be so great.. most of you have gone through many laptops in just a few years.. that cant´t mean quality. I have a Apple Powerbook wich is almost 2 years old, it works just as well as the day it came from the store, it does all I want it
to do.. except make me some double espresso ;)

a friend of mine got a 5 year old iBook and it works perfectly not a single faliure since the day it was bought, and it will keep on running for years to come and do everything it is expected to do.

the 12" powerbook is only $1499 and the 12" iBook is only $999

to have a 17" laptop is stupid in most cases, it´s NOT a portable computer, you´d be better off with the mac mini and a 17"LCD just as portable ;)

We have a couple of Toshiba's in the house, one had a problem, so I looked up the local authorized repair at the Toshiba site. A shop was only 2 miles away and they fixed it no charge in 2 days. Toshiba warranty.

Since you live in NYC, I highly recomend J&R Computer. CompUSA stinks. Where J&R has 9 guys ready to serve you, Comp has 12 knuckleheads floating around that don't have a clue. It's like a puzzle everytime I walk in the place, where I get bounced between four dudes and still walk out less informed than when I walked in. Comp's good for the little things where you hopefully don't need to ask any questions, that's about it.

J&R's good for camera equipment too. The salesman will gladly give you plenty of quality time compared to BH where the guys know their stuff but are all dying to go home. In terms of stock, BH is the last word.

I'd love to make the jump to Mac btw as I think Windows is a poorly designed OS and Bill Gates should be chucked off a very tall building for putting out such a continuosly flawed, crumby, unsafe(virus prone) product. He gives too much money to Congress to be properly policed as it stands.

You know....that does it. Those last two sentences alone made me realize that I need to switch to a Mac. Done.

Sorry to hear your Tosh laptop is having problems. Normally Toshibas are among the most reliable. aronya1 sounds like he's talking sense, though.

As for you Mac lovers out there. Please stop evangelising. I'm happy using PCs - almost all my customers use PCs. If you're enjoying your Mac then I'm happy for you.

Dude get a Dell. Did you try to reformate it yet. It will only take about 30 minutes to do

Having a 17" screen is not stupid, but a necessity on a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT. I have had no trouble carying it around, I bring it everywhere, weather it be from my bed to my desk to Georgia and Florida, and have had no problems with it being cumbersome or heavy.

LOL - I want to, just don't have the money right now, or the energy to try to explain it to my parents. (28, and living at home, can be a b*tch and a half)

I'm not in NYC, but about 40 minutes north. It wouldn't be a pain to get to J&R, but Toshiba has a site in Danbury CT, which is about 20 minutes from me (the way I drive) so I'm going to go there first.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.

Ok, ok...I'll let you slide.

I absolutely H-A-T-E Mac preachers. Piss me off, almost to the point of violence. A little too much city agression, on my part...I suppose.

....but I have to admit they're probably right. I will say that Windows S-T-I-N-K-S, always has...always will. We're all caught in their icy, cold grip. It amazing they are still in business having mastered such an inferior program for all these years. I just have so much software tied up in Windows and that's what's been stoping me from making the switch.

One of these days I will triumph over that sinister Bill Gates.
