I recently shot a series of pictures for a friend and after transfering the pictures to a HDD that was in his computer (as a slave drive) I took the HDD out and put it into my comp (as a slave) and now 80% of the pictures are not viewable although the file size and time/date etc is viewable I am unable to see the picture or edit it in any way. Can anyone help me here with a suggestion as to how i could repair these files or are they gone forever?
Thanx in advance |

I'm assuming that your camera doesn't have the shots anymore. What operating systems are the two computers? I know that fat NT and fat 32 are not compatable...

They were both PCs running XP pro on NTFS the slave drive is NTFS too. some pics are fine and can be seen no worries but quite a few are not veiwable. I was in UK doing some shooting and then after returning to Japan i cannot access them.. both PCs are running english version but the specs are not the same The only thing I havent tried is to run the slave with a NON ide 80 cable because the other PC had a ide 40 (older grey type) that might help matters. Thanx for the reply toocool |

First thing to try is put it back in the other computer and see if you can access there. Don't think the cable is to blame but could be wrong with newer drives. Try the other (or another) 'puter first.

Take the CD that works and copy it and work from there?

Does the BIOS in both machines recognise the drives in the same way ? Different CHS values or type identification can lead to partially readable/ mostly corrupt drive contents.
If you have access to the original - put it in, and record how it is identified in the BIOS at boot time - make sure its the same in the other machine. |

Unfortunately the PC i used to get the pics from camera is in UK (its one i built for my son) I am now in Japan (where i live) and cannot get access to the same comp The bios issue could be the problem I think or even due to that fact of using an IDE40 cable in the UK PC. I remember being able to view ALL files using that machine.
Thank you all for the support and help in this matter. Obviously if I cannot recover the files then i will have to repay the customer their money (I should do that anyway).
They have 1 CD working fine but the other doesnt. I did hear there was some plug-in for PS that repairs files didnt know if this was an option or simply rumour. |
